Composting centres: late and expensive

The city’s plans for its own composting centres are facing delays and cost overruns even before they begin, as construction bids are coming in higher than expected – close to double, given the figures shown. Either the city underestimated the cost of the kind of facility they want, or something’s up here.

I’ve seen city workers doing composting in the old St-Michel quarry (aka Frederic Back park). Sometimes they pile organic matter up with a backhoe, sometimes they spread it out. So I didn’t think of composting as expensively high-tech, although you do need some space to do it in.

The quarry composting doesn’t smell bad, but then it’s not food composting being done there, but probably tree chippings, park and gardening trimmings picked up by the city, less likely to get funky.
