Does online news lead to extremes?

Trawling the feeds this morning I noticed a Gazette headline reading Montreal weather: Sunny and bitter cold. This was posted Sunday and cites, in the lede, the wind chill of -14. Almost sheepishly the second brief graf admits the real Environment Canada high to have been -3.

I was out and about on Sunday. It was not in any sense bitter cold.

Is the Gazette trying to mimic MTL Blog, which consistently cites the most extreme temperatures and ludicrous factoids as bait for clicks? Or is it just something about the internet that pushes all of us to overstate and overemphasize to seize a moment of attention from wandering eyes?
