It was a tough loss, but what a story. At the risk of having a mob appear at my door bearing pitchforks I will also say this: as compelling as Layla’s story is, Emma Raducanu’s story is even better. She basically came out of nowhere (ranked 150) and not only won the US Open, she did it without losing a single set in the entire tournament. We will probably never see that again, so be glad we saw it yesterday.

Noteworthy that both of them were born in Canada – Raducanu in Toronto, Fernandez in Montreal. I feel for Fernandez, she took out the top seeds, but there can only be one winner

Isn’t Fernandez from Laval?

Chris, in international sport, “Montreal” is usually taken to mean the urban agglomeration, not the legal bounds of the Ville only. People elsewhere who have heard of Montreal often will not have heard of Laval.

Thanks Kate -!to international media Toronto can also include Oakville or Mississauga – I haven’t checked details for either of them, I thought being Canadian-born was interesting enough.

Kate, yes, I know/agree, but this is a Montreal blog, so…
Wikipedia is actually missing a citation for her birth place, so I’m not even sure which is correct.

Pas de bonnes nouvelles sportives sur le plan local, Auger-Aliassime et Fernandez les deux. Mais ils restent formidables.
Laval est le Mississauga de Montréal.

@blork Not the case. Leylah had to slay several top players in grueling matches. Incredibly she beat the #2, 3 and 5 seeds.. Raducanu didn’t face a single top 10 seeded player. Leylah was exhausted by the time the finals came. Another day’s rest would have done her wonders.

Phil, that’s why I figured Leylah was going to win and I was very surprised when I saw that Raducanu was actually favoured to win the match. You both forgot to mention that Raducanu also played in the qualifiers in three consecutive days leading up to the 1st Round. These odd setters look at a ton of stats and I’m assuming Emma was more consistent during the tournament. Leylah was on the defensive throughout the match and consistently playing from behind.
