The fire in the north end a few days ago may have been set following a quarrel among neighbours. Cops had come a few days earlier to settle a fight, during which one party had threatened, in front of witnesses, to burn the building down. Not surprisingly, police are investigating.

Media have been a little confused about weather Friday morning, because east of here there’s something the media are enjoying calling a bomb cyclone, while Montreal has only had a light snowfall and a return to arctic conditions with some wind and a high of –17°. Le Devoir has some pictures explaining it. The airport is struggling after flight cancellations all down the east coast and people are warned off highways (Google slotted this as “cbc.ca (satire)”), but the city is doing OK.Vague updates: There’s an extreme cold warning and blowing snow and continuing airport troubles.
It seems weird to me that the Journal sees highway snow clearance as an obstacle to traffic.
And we can all feel safer knowing that Martin Coiteux is keeping an eye on the situation.

Forty trees on the esplanade of Place Ville-Marie were cut down this week ahead of renovations to the complex. They were planted thirty years ago in an earlier attempt to rethink the area.
On reddit, someone has posted that the familiar PVM Christmas tree which has appeared at the foot of McGill College for decades during the holiday season has been taken down for the last time, and will not be back.
