A pedestrian was killed this morning in Montreal North by a turning dump truck. TVA is a little more graphic.

I’m not sure why the headline Irish-Montrealers rally to save remains of St. Bridget’s Refuge from development annoys me so much. Maybe because it names one Irish-Montrealer, who’s already been in the news about naming REM stations – not a movement or group – who is this guy, why does he have the ear of the media, and who’s he speaking for? not me – but I think it’s more that the value of the land has nothing to do with the history of a building that used to stand there, but as a small green refuge in a densely built-up part of town.
It will not be nice for anyone working around Lagauchetière or for the church itself to have the proposed huge glass box lurking on that piece of land, and it has nothing to do with claims to be Irish, or the memory of St. Bridget’s Refuge.

A remnant of the old St-Pierre river, which used to be a feature of the west end of the island, is still visible in one tiny bit of undeveloped land, but a judge has ordered the city to bury it. It’s not that simple, though – this involves other municipalities, environmental protections and the contentious development of one of the last green spaces in that part of town.

Outremont is going to experiment with an optical illusion to make a crosswalk on Bernard more obvious. The catch here is that those illusions only work from one angle – from any other spot they don’t look like anything.

The public is being asked to chip in on the most trivial of questions about the REM: the exact livery of the trains, which will be silver, black and lime green in some combination. You can vote here.

The city’s ombudsman has brought in her annual report and Metro has a list of the interesting points about what she’s been able to do. Her office is the last resort for citizens unable to get satisfaction from other departments at city hall.

The city is not getting its millions back from one construction firm that handed over $200,000 then promptly folded.
