Village from 1400 found downtown
Remnants from an aboriginal village dating back to 1400 have been found at Sherbrooke and Peel, and the city is permitting more digs in the area.
Archaeologists would still like to find the original Hochelaga, while admitting that the Iroquoians moved around from time to time as they used up the resources where they were, so it’s likely they’ll never find one spot everyone can agree was the village Jacques Cartier saw. Still, this kind of discovery helps establish that Montreal was not the empty terra nullius that some historians would like it to be.
