Despite budget cuts, schools soldier on

The city’s grade schools are trudging along despite years of budget cuts to education and long‑term neglect of school buildings. Same CP story in French.

The CSDM has put up the equivalent of five schools in temporary classroom structures added to existing schools around town. A mini baby boom in the 2000s and the influx of immigrants and refugees has boosted the need for classroom spaces – a new law mandating that all children have the right to an education even if they’re undocumented will increase that population.

But classroom spaces also need teachers, and we have a shortage of those as well.
