Montreal and its many languages
A Le Devoir editorialist goes out on a limb, observing that Montreal is the most bilingual and, in fact, most effectively trilingual city on the continent, but is it a surprise that we keep this fact on the down low? Officially, we’re a monolingual city in a monolingual province so any projects or intentions involving bilingualism tend not to get much play.
As a footnote: is Jean-Benoît Nadeau correct about our high rate of bilingualism? There must be U.S. cities where a lot of people function fairly seamlessly in both Spanish and English.
