City workers are doing a hell of a lot of overtime and are being paid handsomely too. As they should be, I hasten to add – but if the problem is Denis Coderre’s 2014 vow to cut down on city staffing numbers, it’s not a smart target to stick to if there’s actually enough work for more people. The city should hire if it needs the hands.

Do we really want to call the new bridge the Pont Samuel-de-Champlain? This Radio-Canada piece asks the question and gives an email address and even a mailing address where you can express your thoughts.
On the one hand, we do have the Jacques-Cartier, and it’s always been called that (except for its first four years, when it was known as the Harbour Bridge, but it was renamed in 1934 so there can’t be too many people who remember using the old name). On the other we’ve always had just the Champlain, so it would feel natural to transfer the name to the new bridge.
We have the Mercier and the Victoria, which get by just fine with single names – but that’s balanced by the Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine tunnel with its triple-barreled title.
I don’t have any strong feelings about this one. What do we think?

The bodies of a European couple in their eighties were found Wednesday in Anjou after neighbours noticed signs of neglect around their house. Police don’t suspect a crime, but there will be an investigation into why the social services agency that provided them with care services didn’t take steps when nobody answered the door.

A man has been charged with murder and indignity to a corpse, the 19th homicide of the year. La Presse reports the story in a rather more restrained way, observing that the disappearance and death of Cédric Gagnon in July had passed under the radar.
Update: Friends of the dead man are shocked at what happened to Gagnon and that a supposed friend and bandmate is the only suspect.

We’re already dreading Turcot closures in November now. A big section of the old structure will be taken down earlier in the month.
We’re also dreading the closure of Angrignon even later in the year and continuing into 2019.
