Here we go: Joey Saputo wants tax breaks on Saputo Stadium as his soccer tickets become ever more expensive. Saputo held a presser Friday to talk about how he’d spent all this money on the team, although as I recall a) he did it voluntarily and b) he pushed the Impact into the major league, and enlarged the stadium, before it had a fan base big enough to justify this.

And now he wants public money to keep it all going.

Interestingly, the one thing not mentioned in the item is Saputo’s situation after the USMCA trade deal. Seems to me if Saputo gets cheaper milk, his cheese profits are bound to go up. So crying poor mouth to the city is poorly timed, no?

Taking another safe position – it was against rats earlier this week – Ensemble says it’s against sexual harassment in the metro. Next: Ensemble says headaches are bad.

A businessman wants Villeray borough to take a softer line on its renovation requirements so he can save the St-Alphonse-d’Youville church building, which is crumbling alongside Crémazie in the borough. Built in 1931, this was one of the last big classic church projects in the city, but after the highway was built right in its face in the 1960s during Quebec’s general abandonment of church activities, it never recovered. It hasn’t been an operating parish in years, and was supposed to become a café-theatre, but it seems to me that its location is against it even if the borough were to concede on the copper roof.

Investigation has shown that police had an electronic peephole in the men’s bathroom in Lafontaine Park, presumably to watch acts of “grossière indécence” taking place on the premises. Look out for the magic eye!

As happens periodically, a truck got stuck under the Guy Street railway underpass this week, stopping three train lines as well as traffic in both directions on Guy until it was cleared. The Journal is clearly outraged that the driver was ticketed a mere $160 for paying no attention to the various signs warning that the underpass has only 3.7 meters in clearance.

With cannabis set to be legalized next week CBC looks at the rules in Quebec and CTV at the state of play in Montreal including treatment of possibly stoned drivers. I don’t doubt the laws will be adjusted as we find out how the populace reacts to the change of federal law – my prediction, as mentioned earlier, is that not much is going to change in general behaviour around the drug.
