The STM’s garage sale of a grab bag of real old transit memorabilia was a big success, with people queueing up as early as 7 on Sunday. Philippe Schnobb says they may hold another in a couple of years after few more metro stations are refurbished.

A metro train halted between Jean-Drapeau and Longueuil last Tuesday and some are complaining that the evacuation of passengers was chaotic as passengers had to leave the train and walk to Longueuil, allegedly with nobody reassuring them the rails had been de‑electrified and nobody helping the disabled. STM says it would never allow passengers to evacuate onto a live rail. I think maybe in this case it’s so ironclad in the STM’s internal thinking that you’d never allow anyone to wander around on a live rail that they slightly forgot this isn’t as ingrained in the minds of passengers as it is in themselves.

La Presse says there’s a malaise around religious signifiers at city hall but the anecdotes are mild-mannered compared to most. Marvin Rotrand wants a motion to confirm that there’s no issue with councillors wearing religious symbols, but at the moment Lionel Perez wears a kippa, a few councillors wear discreet crosses but none wears hijab, and nobody seems to see a problem with this. Mayor Plante herself is inclined to be tolerant.
There’s still a crucifix in the council chamber and curiously Rotrand’s name is also in this story, advising it be taken down, although once again nobody’s really militating for or against it. There was a time that every significant room in Quebec had a crucifix in it and nobody even cared enough after the Quiet Revolution to go around and take them all down.

After an emergency closure Saturday morning the Mercier bridge was reopened to traffic, but further work will have to be done as the bridge is judged by an engineering expert to be essentially falling apart.
