Mile Ex: Tech firms squeezing others out
La Presse notes how new landlords and big tech firms are squeezing out smaller businesses that had found affordable digs in Mile Ex when it was still a contingent and unexciting part of town.

Wha.. Drawn & Quarterly has to move out? That stinks. Why isn’t this also covered by the anglo media?

Interesting that even this article makes not of the fact that Mile Ex was a name made up by real estate dopes – “Le nom Mile-Ex, né de la contraction des noms de deux quartiers voisins, Mile End et Parc-Extension, a été inventé par des courtiers immobiliers « pour donner du cachet au quartier », affirme Penny Pattison”
Glad to hear D&Q found new digs nearby, sucks that they had to move to a smaller space though.

@Meezly, the article is talking about D&Q’s editorial offices on Esplanade, not the retail store on Bernard.

Am I the only who, after reading the first third and seeing the photos, assumed that the story would certainly include news of an impending move for Le Pick-Up, and was kind of stunned to hear that in fact their lease was renewed for 10 years last spring? Odd that much of this story about renovictions, gentrification, etc.., is anchored by/framed around a business that hasn’t been displaced…

I guess they saw the writing on the wall and played it smart – good for them.
