Resto owner feeds health workers for free
This restaurant owner offered 600 free meals to workers in health care – people from “Saint‑Jérôme, Laval, Sainte‑Justine” – at his restaurant in Griffintown, on Tuesday night. Not a mask in any of the photos.

I thought health care workers were our heroes? Why now mask-shame them? They wear PPE all day, they’re probably enjoying being without a mask for once. And food and drink go in your mouth, pretty hard to do that with a mask. Also looks like a young crowd, where covid is not a big risk.

I am making an observation, Chris. I am not “shaming” anybody.

The staff seem to be wearing those plastic facemasks

At least there’s that.

My-sister-the-doctor wears masks in public for the sake of others’ comfort. It’s strictly social signalling as far as she’s concerned — which is important, so she wears the mask.

Alison, so she doesn’t buy any of the studies that show a mask – any kind of mask – cuts the amount of droplets a person potentially exhales onto other people?

Kate, It’s possible she’s just that confident she doesn’t have it, but since other people don’t know she’s covid- she wears a mask anyway.

Alison, how can anyone – especially a doctor – know from moment to moment that they don’t have it? Maybe she tested negative yesterday, but she could catch it tomorrow and start passing it around. Testing negative is not a permanent status.
The mask is a piece of insurance because nobody can be certain of their Covid status unless they’ve just been tested.

But I bet for most people, they are wearing a mask in the belief it protects them. They are thinking of themselves, rather than others.
Hence for most people, it matters that they don’t have it.
In three months I’ve been inside twice, both times to the hospital. If I get the Virus, it’s from passing contact out walking the dog. I’m not immune, but the chance of me getting it is very low.
I suppose I’d wear a mask if I went somewhere (they expected masks at the hospital), but social.pressure kicks in.

Kate,
I’m really not sure how that works.

Meh. Just because someone is a doctor doesn’t make them infallible. NB can attest to that.

Uatu,
Just making an observation. Not suggesting anyone’s right or wrong, just adding a data point to Kate’s.
