The renaissance of Plaza St-Hubert?
La Presse hails what it calls the renaissance of Plaza St-Hubert and visits some new boutiques. I still miss the trees that used to shade the street.

What was the net loss of trees? PM seems to have made reducing the “îlots chaleur” a major priority.

Joey, I don’t think there was a net loss of trees. If anything there was a net gain. But all the old mature trees were chopped down and the new ones will take a couple of decades to get to the same size. I miss the old trees too.
The silver lining is that tree-planting practices have improved massively in recent years and the new trees on St-Hubert will have more space for their roots to expand. The old trees were apparently in poor health.

I seem to recall they didn’t think most of the old trees would survive the excavation of the street they had to do – don’t forget, they were redoing infrastructure under the street as well as the cosmetic stuff on the surface. I don’t think any new trees had been planted along there for years.

Thanks, good to hear. My impression is that these new trees grow fairly quickly.

I think there is very little respect in this town for just how rare and irreplaceable large, mature trees are in an urban environment. Plugging some saplings into hole in the concrete does not replace 50 year old shade trees. Especially when you consider that the saplings will be unceremoniously destroyed if they become inconvenient to someone who would like to park a dumpster on the sidewalk for a few months.
