The city’s adding 42 more agents to the SPVM at a cost of $5.5 million, most to work directly against gun violence and 14 more agents, civilians and police, to be added to investigative services.

Basically graft. Watch the crime numbers go up.

Plante must be doing this to try to cut Coderre’s latest “law and order” shtick off at the knees, but that doesn’t make it any better.

Remember that time we were talking about defunding the police? Good times, good times.

From a personal standpoint, this was no doubt a difficult decision to make for a politician who has never been particularly pro-police. But electorally, it’s a no-brainer, because if Coderre’s law-and-order nonsense had been allowed to fester, it could well have been the issue that lost Plante the election. (The moment of incandescent rage about bike paths seems to have passed.) No doubt the Coderre team will continue their dog-whistle campaign against Will Prosper, implying he’s a gang member, but that may not gain them as much traction as they had hoped.

How does someone manage to drive in the wrong direction on the Metropolitan? A young woman has been charged with dangerous driving after a crash early Sunday from which her two passengers and someone from another vehicle were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Well, all you need to do is to “affaiblit your facultés” and you can achieve driving west on the eastbound section.

More than 9,000 cyclists are riding Sunday morning in the Tour de l’Île.

Doesn’t seem like a big crowd. When I was a teenager in the late 80’s/early 90’s, the number of participants was above 30 000

Some bright folks held a march Saturday against mandatory vaccines for health workers and against the vaccination passport.

CTV’s Rob Lurie noted on Twitter this morning that “86% of the 604 infections recorded Saturday were from people not fully vaccinated.”

Thought experiment: if you refuse vaccination (for non-medical reasons) you should be mandatorily given covid in a controlled manner. (Wait isn’t that vaccination? Shhhh!).

Assume this starts at a low point for hospitalizations. The number of people is strictly controlled towards available health care (less a large percent for vaccinated peoples’ health care). Some form of mandatory isolation during the infectious period. Then the chips fall where they may without mass cases spreading.

Assuming you’re going to get it eventually, which looking south… well, the best scenario is the above. Yes, we’re making people do stuff (ugh) but we’re ensuring the best possible outcome for the bad choice these people have made while protecting them and society.

There will be deaths, permanent disability, ME/CFS, etc, but that choice was already made and there will be fewer – possibly. (Assuming less-stressed healthcare leads to better results).

This figure — roughly 85% — has held true for the week or two I’ve been keeping tabs on the Santé Québec Twitter feed, which has the case/vaccination breakdown. It’s very valuable perspective on the current pandemic dimensions.

The same Twitter feed is showing a 28 day tally that maybe drops to 80%ish for hospitalizations, to add:

We need to switch to anal swabs for testing. Let’s see how many people would rather get vaccinated than have an anal swab for COVID. 😀

Seriously, the vaccine passport should continue to make things difficult… Add in person shopping for big box stores (order for pick-up only, like restaurants). And slowly find more and more ways to limit their lives until they realize that it’s a societal value. It’s not about YOU, it’s about all those people who can’t get vaccinated.

Shots were fired overnight in two locations, in St‑Michel, where a young man was injured, and in Lachine. There have been arrests in the St‑Michel incident; in Lachine, bullet casings were found, but no victims.

Also Saturday, an older man was stabbed by a teenage girl indoors in Montreal North.

Kids need more support services. I wonder where the city could find this extra money?
