A shooting Wednesday afternoon in Riviere-des-Prairies ended with one man in hospital and three arrests. La Presse suggests the victim was injured by shattered glass.
La Presse also counts 100 incidents of gunfire in town so far this year.
The Journal also reports that there were gunshots in Laval early Wednesday leaving two injured. Seems typical that they mention the location, a strip mall parking lot, and that there’s a daycare in the mall – even though this incident happened at quarter to three in the morning.

Activists turned up Saturday at a restaurant in the Plateau and staged an animal rights protest. The owner of Chez Victoire asks why these protesters are targeting small local establishments, and no answer is floated.
The report also mentions a protest at “a restaurant in Manitoba” – in fact, there was a protest not long before the pandemic broke at the Manitoba restaurant – which is here in town, on St‑Zotique West.

Why shouldn’t “small local establishments” be protested? Why should one get a pass for being small?

Because it’s arbitrary. And mean-spirited. These protests are vengeful. They aren’t meant to raise awareness or change minds, they’re meant to punish random businesses these activists don’t like. They always target independent restaurants, never McDonald’s or Provigo, places that sell a million times more meat than any neighbourhood restaurant.

DeWolf, are you sure your (seeming) disagreement with their cause isn’t colouring your view here? What if it was, I dunno, 1960s USA: should pro-civil rights protesters only have targeted large hotel chains that disallowed blacks, or would it be legit to protest outside a mom & pop hotel too?

Strategically, though, you are more likely to be able to bully an independent restaurant into changing its menu than a multinational.By no means do I support this “act of protest”- but that is the obvious tactical reason why small local restaurants are being targeted.

Ian, please re-read. I wasn’t making an equivalency between human civil rights and animal rights (though these protesters might), I was picking a random protest that I figured DeWolf would be in favour of. I wasn’t even stating any for/against position on this issue.
I’m saying that protesting “small local establishments” is perfectly legit, in general. Let me try another cause you maybe agree with: environmentalism. If both large and small companies are dumping toxins into a river, should protesters only march outside the large companies? I say no. It’s perfectly legit to protest against any perpetrator. In fact, it’s often a good tactic. It can be easier to get the small actors to change first.

Roger Latour of the Flora Urbana blog reports on new damage by CP at the Champ des Possibles in the Mile End. After CP clear-cut part of the land (which belongs to the city) in 2014, new trees were planted, including a specific elm of a rare species. Latour went back this week to find CP has once again slashed down trees on that land, including the elm.

This should be getting more attention. It’s sad and damning that no federal party leader will take a stand against the racist and unconstitutional Bill 21.
This ties into the recent CBC article by J Montpetit you shared about Trudeau’s Faustian bargain with Legault.
At least Thomas Mulcair has been quite vocal, but he’s got nothing to lose as I believe he’s retired!

People love to call things they disagree with “unconstitutional” but our constitution allows basically any loophole we want.

It’s rather remarkable that Jagmeet Singh has nothing to say about Loi 21 as it basically means people that wear turbans (or kippah or hijab) wouldn’t even be able to be an MNA in Quebec if it passes.
Frankly I see Trudeau’s silence on the matter as a dogwhistle. He knows that a lot of people in QC support Loi 21 and those same people might vote Liberal but would never vote for a man with a turban.

According to La Presse’s Louis-Samuel Perron, our gangs are getting too blasé about gunfire, using shots to warn someone against sleeping with the wrong woman, showing off their guns on social media as part of an ongoing gang war. It would all seem adolescent and silly except that people get injured and killed, and sometimes it’s someone completely unconnected to gang life.
Laval is concerned about a growing number of minors being arrested for illegal firearms.

I wouldn’t put it past the SPVM to wag the dog and send non-unformed officers to fire off a few rounds in neighbourhoods to get additional press about how the “gun problem” is ramping up. No evidence of this, just something I feel they would do.
