Sports mavens: does an article saying that Patrick Roy has no interview planned with the Canadiens mean that he’ll never be hired? Or that it’s almost a certainty?

Quebec vedette Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge is suing La Presse for $1.85M over their revelation that he was not vaccinated, including allegations that he was dropped from District 31 for that reason and that he had tried to gain admission to restaurants without a vax passport. He has since lost other contracts. The paper plans to defend itself.
Ephraim
He’s a public figure, he gave up his right to privacy for fame… and no one has a right to be exempt from the consequences of their personal decisions.

Entertainment venues are cancelling shows and preparing to go dark throughout January as the pandemic continues.
As hinted at a few days ago, people will need to show vaccination passports to enter SAQ and SQDC stores but only as of January 18. (And they can still order online.)
TVA says that the health and social services institute projects 3000 hospitalizations including 400 ICU cases as of next week, if the current trend continues.
Joey
Nice of the health minister to give the unvaxxed 12 days to stock up on booze and weed. Not like we’ll be way past 3K hospitalizations by then…
Kate
One Twitter satirist suggests that the delay is to enable the SAQ to recoup sales lost during the labour actions before the holidays.
steph
it’s just nonsense. I hate giving anti-vaxxers reason, but this clowning around helps them fortify their position that it’s not about health measures, but about government control.
mare
This is kind of counter productive. Even if this somehow convinces someone to get vaccinated today —and they miraculously land an appointment— they still need to wait 2 months before they can get a second dose, and many more months to receive the booster. That timeline is so long that the likelihood to sway their initial vaccine refusal is very low and they’ll just shrug and think “What’s the point, it will be over by then anyway…”.
(I have no idea what *would* help, unfortunately. From reporting from the US, even family members dying won’t change people’s mind. )
Kevin
Co-workers made appts yesterday and got their third doses today, so making an appt isn’t hard.
Preventing the unvaxxed from accessing society over the next two years or so is something that should have been done a while ago.
j2
The booster/got covid ambiguity will be a factor too. It’s not recommended you get the booster for months after having covid.
Mark Côté
Not exactly ironclad proof, but appointments for 1st doses did go up after the announcement of vaccine-passport requirements at the SAQ and SQDC.

I don’t want this to be news, but it is: a Chinese Montrealer made a video recording of a tirade by a white woman in a grocery line as she accuses Chinese people of creating Covid. The only good thing is that other people (out of frame) speak up in his defence and try to shut her down.
I don’t believe the woman has been identified, and the target of her invective says he will not be taking the incident to police.
Meezly
The CBC article said he would not pursue the matter with police, which may mean he won’t get them to lay charges against that hateful racist, but I think he would’ve at least reported the incident.
Kate
If somebody shouts at you in a public place (or somewhere like a store or restaurant where the public gather), is it illegal? Does it become illegal if the shouting includes racist or other terms understood to be abusive?
Meezly
It’s true, bullying and one-off harassment isn’t a criminal offense. I think it’s only criminal if the person utters a threat.
Uatu
If he’s like me he’s heard this before. Multiple times. I’ve been getting racist comments ever since I was a kid and you kinda understand that it has less to do with you and more to do with the idiot insulting you.
Dominic
It seems like it might be “technically” illegal? From Wikipedia: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_Canada#Section_319:_Inciting_or_promoting_hatred )
Section 319: Inciting or promoting hatred
Section 319(1): Publicly inciting hatred—makes it an offence to communicate statements in a public place which incite hatred against an identifiable group, where it is likely to lead to a breach of the peace. The Crown prosecutor can proceed either by indictment or by summary process. The maximum penalty is imprisonment of not more than two years. There is no minimum punishment.Kate
I wonder whether one random loose cannon member of the public would be deemed to be inciting. I always assumed that meant something more like a formal speech, or someone e.g. leading a protest march, not J. Random Karen in a grocery store. But it could go either way.
Certainly I was hoping it would lead to a breach of the peace. It would’ve been nice to see someone shy a bag of frozen peas at the side of her head.
Meezly
The things is, anti-asian racism is so 2020. What that Karen should really be directing her hatred towards are the unvaxxed. They seem to be the ones who are dragging this out for everyone.
Uatu
Yeah well that’s the thing about being a visible minority. Nobody knows if you’re vaxxed they just see somebody they can unload on. That also goes for language nuts, racist karens, snobs of other ethnic groups etc I’m so tired of it that I just turn my back on them and get on with my day. Life’s too short to waste time on these fuckers.

It was a short vacation for some of those notorious influencers, who managed to fly back despite some airlines washing their hands of the situation.
Authorities were waiting at the airport to greet the returning heroes, because these rude lawbreakers will become heroes to some. But they are now in a world of hurt.
Update: The tour organizer defends himself.
After this, I’m done with this story and these people, unless some big new angle comes along.
Ephraim
That’s what bothered you? Not his homophobic diatribe to a journalist? If he is an influencer, I hope that diatribe leaks and he has a price to pay… because homophobia isn’t acceptable in Quebec.
Ephraim
Apparently his name is Kev Gauthier and with 360 followers, he definitely isn’t much of an influencer. But he certainly is a homophobe… https://www.instagram.com/gauthier_1212
Kate
His homophobic remarks seemed to me like part of a scatter-shot of insults. I know they’re offensive, but they were only part of the general offensiveness in the scene.
Ephraim
It wouldn’t even occur to you to use the words “fif” or “tapette” as an insult… unless you personally think they are insults. When stressed, the WORST part of us come out… and in this case, it’s here for the world to see.
Blork
404 on that TVA link.

Here’s the twitter video… https://twitter.com/ofaucher97/status/1478959332918280193

I agree with Ephraim, homophobic insults ( like antisemitic, racist, etc… ) shouldn’t be in anyone’s go to repertoire. I could fill this text field with insults ( and working with the public I have curated a choice list to choose from ) but discrimination never makes the cut.. because those aren’t insults to a person but to a group.
Kate
Thanks, Blork. I think the story was moved – I’ve replaced it with a link to the story on the Journal.
Max
We even rated a mention on TMZ. Ugh.
qatzelok
The article says that this was a private charter, which removes a lot of the drama from the “scandal.”
Kudos to Ephraim who was able to spot a sin in the wreckage of this meme.
Blork
Can’t let this fade away without a good laff at the organizer and his aspiring music career:

This guy even photographs like a d bag
Max
Something tells me there’ll be another name change in Kevin’s future. Along with a detailed investigation of his finances.

Who in their right mind would hitch their wagon to this team, at this time?
I’m 1000% certain that St. Pat’s got more than enough coin stashed away that he’ll never ever see a need to associate himself with the disaster that is this years Habs.
Kate 22:41 on 2022-01-06 Permalink
Somebody might, just might, be tempted to be the hero who revives the team.
Roy may not need the cash but he slunk out of Montreal on a sour note that still resounds, and he may yet hope to repair that damage.
Who knows.
dwgs 16:12 on 2022-01-07 Permalink
Not a chance. He walked out on Montreal as a player and years later walked out from his coach / GM job in Colorado with no notice. He’s a hothead with and ego the size of a planet. He may get an interview to keep up appearances but I’d be beyond shocked if he gets the gig here.

dwgs, now the Journal says Roy did meet with the Canadiens.
