The growing number of empty buildings around downtown are worrying firefighters.

“IS” worrying. The subject of the verb is “number,” which is singular, even if it refers to a plural number of buildings (the object). OMG I just had a grammargasm! #grammarnazi

If the next comment isn’t “go home Blork, you’re drunk” I’m never coming back here.

Go home, Blork, you’re drunk. Takes a comma after “home”.

Better get home soon Blork, coronavirus can spread starting around 22:00, don’t ya know? 🙂

As for the grammar, looks like a case of English vs American: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_grammatical_differences

What La Presse calls the heart of the old Champlain bridge was taken down very carefully overnight and will be floated over to be dismantled in Brossard next spring. It’s the largest-scale move of the kind ever done in Canada. Good pics from the Journal.

SPVM chief Sylvain Caron wants to reduce neighbourhood police stations because they’re too expensive to run. With a short timeline of how police stations have been added and removed in recent years.

This is one of those pendulum issues. One generation decentralizes, the next one centralizes. Each generation has arguments in favour of their position, although saving money is usually first on the list.

Sylvain Caron: “On est partout sur le territoire et en même temps on n’est nulle part. On est divisés en 30 postes de quartier. Trouvez-moi une ville en Amérique du Nord qui a 30 postes. Ça ne nous aide pas.”

Brooklyn (population 2.5 million) has 34 police stations.

      There. Found one.

LAPD 21 stations. NYPD 77 precincts. Vancouver 41 divisions.

Journalist Amady John Wesley, who worked for Montreal’s Haitian-language Écoute FM, was killed in an attack outside Port-au-Prince on Thursday.

(I’m not linking to Écoute FM because it gives out with security warnings, but it’s Google-able.)

Hospitals are overwhelmed, shelters for the homeless are in crisis because so many of their staff are out sick, the army has arrived to support vaccination efforts, and federal prisons are running short of staff.

I got my booster at Palais des Congres yesterday, and there were a handful of people in uniform (maybe Navy?) wandering around, wiping down surfaces and whatnot. Seemed a bit ‘disaster theatre’ to me, but maybe they’re doing more behind the scenes.

Hearing some stories fon Twitter from Ontario about the situation in hospitals:

“There is no bed to admit my mother to so Ottawa Hospital is sending her from the pain clinic to the ER. The ER has a 6 day (DAY!) wait to get admitted. My mother, a stage 4 immunocompromised cancer pt, will potentially be sitting on a gurney in the ER for 6 DAYS.”
“One more sign of strain in healthcare system: our kid slipped and hurt her shoulder. We called Telehealth Ontario to figure out if it should be looked at. Waited on hold for 45 mins. A receptionist recorded our number, said a nurse would call us back in 4 days.”

Everyone stay safe, and try not to do anything that might possibly lead to requiring medical attention. Unless it’s refusing to get vaccinated, then it’s fine, we wouldn’t want to ration care or anything.

It’s a good piece of advice, vasi.
