A group of anti-mask complotistes has started bringing aid to the homeless, outraging the legitimate organizations who’ve been doing this all along.

As of 2021, SPVM police have been checking immigration statuses less often, but they are not legally free to stop doing it entirely.

It feels weird to be reporting something positive, even in a muted sense, about the SPVM.

A memorial was held Tuesday to mark a year since the death of Raphaël André, the Innu man who died of exposure in a porta-potty because he had no access to shelter. The shelter tent on Cabot Square was named for him.

Karim Ouellet, who for a time was one of the most promising musical artists in Quebec, but who hadn’t released anything new since 2016, was found dead in a Quebec City studio Monday night. Police have ruled out foul play.

The Canadiens have named a new general manager who will have the unenviable job of pulling the team up out of the worst slump in living memory. Kent Hughes used to be a player agent. CTV doesn’t say whether he speaks French, but TVA checks that box: he does.

Social work students at McGill are digging in their heels and refusing to attend in‑person classes.

The official line now is that the return to school won’t spark another surge in contagions.

Radio-Canada is revealing a new hospital policy from Quebec, basically saying everyone will catch Covid so there’s no point in trying to keep it out. Point 4 is “Redéfinir la qualité minimale des soins” which is fucking scary. They can look at how residents were treated in the CHSLDs in March 2020 for examples of how to deliver minimal care. Hospitalizations continue to rise.

So they want families to provide more care. OK. I look forward to the decree obliging employers to give those family members time off and to keep their jobs open for them, while the government provides financial assistance.

I was just reading yesterday (for non-COVID reasons) that 16th century Italian towns had dedicated, permanent trust funds set up to provide the money needed for poor relief, hospitals and extra civic workers during plague outbreaks. Also, that the whole point of plague regulations was to make sure that the towns survived the outbreaks to continue as economic entities. None of this is new.

And what about people who have no families?

La Presse: Par exemple, advenant une surcharge trop importante du réseau, au lieu d’offrir des soins « A+ à tout le monde » pourrait-on « donner un B », a dit la Dre Opatrny.

Ah yes, the QC healthcare system, known for decades of adequate funding an A+ level care for all, right up until three weeks ago. I get that this is all very complicated and the policymakers have literally no good options – but some recognition of how fragile things are and how deeply unprepared we were for COVID (and then for Omicron) would at least make the rest of the seemingly impromptu pronouncements from the premier on down seem less full of crap.

In a bit of good news for a change, Mamadi Camara has received permanent residence in Canada, and hopes to get citizenship eventually.
