Doctors at McGill have made a multimedia package covering trauma care procedures in Ukrainian to be sent to medics in the war zone.

A concert was held in the Ukrainian hall on Hutchison to raise funds; meanwhile, some want next week’s OSM concerts featuring a young Russian pianist to be called off.

CTV says the local Russian community is divided by the invasion.

Edited to add: a TVA journalist talked to some very elderly folks at the Ville ukrainienne in Rosemont about the war and history.

According to the article, the pianist in question made an anti-war statement. He should be encouraged and supported.

I would think so, but presumably this young man will be taking his performance earnings back to Russia, and if they’re shutting off all flow of cash to Russia, this shouldn’t be allowed. Not much of an argument, though.

I really feel for this pianist. it’s obvious the younger generation can see through the russian media propoganda, but they are also aware of the repercussions of speaking out. Maybe Canada will open the door open to allowing him a refugee application, saving him from reprocussions? I can easily imagine “returning to russia” isn’t safe, even with the little he’s said so far.
The cash flow argument is weak. European Union imports an average of over 380 million cubic metres per day of gas by pipeline from Russia,.. with prices on the upswing – we’re now talking ~2$ per cubic meter. That’s an absurd amount of money. This musicians “cash flow” is not what’s feeding the war machine.

The Centre des mémoires montréalaises looks back on artist Robert LaPalme, cartoonist and painter. He’s probably best known for the panels at the foot of the escalator down to the metro’s yellow line, originally conceived for Expo 67, and for Orphée et Dionysos sur les bords du Styx at Place des Arts.

The Gazette’s history bit of the moment is a photo of Pierre Trudeau at the Ritz.

The temps des sucres is beginning and there are items about where to go to experience sugar shack culture. You can also get sugar shack meals for takeout or delivery. Some shacks are suffering from the same shortage of workers plaguing the restaurant industry generally.

Confession: I’ve never been to a sugar shack.

I got a box for four and a veggie box for two last night. (Chalet des Erables, owner organized the cabane a la maison inititative, each batch of pea soup takes her more than 24 hours to make).

Being normal-sized people we have leftovers for days.

I think maybe it’s that I don’t like pea soup and I don’t like beans and I’m not keen on the idea of an entire dinner steeped in maple syrup, wonderful though it can be in its place…

I was lucky enough to enjoy the cabane a sucre when we had field trips during elementary and high school. It’s damned good eating, but I think that the only way to survive that sugar laced glutton fest is to have the metabolism of someone under 19yrs old.

I am not a fan of pea soup, but this soup is very good.

And yeah, the portions are designed for large men doing physical labour all day… so having it at home means the leftovers can go in the freezer.

Police without protective gear evacuated a burning building in Côte St‑Luc late Saturday, ending up in hospital with smoke inhalation.

There were shots fired in Montreal North (no victims) and then two more fires, including one that damaged some businesses in Villeray.

Businesses around Pie-IX in Montreal North have suffered from the double whammy of SRB construction and the pandemic, but have hopes for an end to construction and reopening later this year.
