The man accused of attacking a little girl on Monday has been sent to the Pinel Institute for a psychiatric evaluation.

The girl’s shaken family, in court Wednesday, were keen to make sure the accused was not put back on the street. One family member said he’d expected more of a response from politicians; the mayor had already deplored the incident.

How come the media hasn’t published the attacker’s face, when they have already shown the poor girl’s injured face, when she seemed to be sleeping or unconscious too. I hope the paper got permission to publish that shot.

    • Joey 09:27 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

@Meezly I’m pretty sure the first time I saw that awful picture was an Instagram story posted by her aunt (not 100% positive, though).

    • Kate 09:32 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

They don’t usually post the faces of the accused, unless they’re well-known gangsters. In theory, everyone’s innocent till proven guilty, even when there’s little doubt that the correct person has been identified as the assailant.

In this case the issue will turn on whether the attacker was in his right mind.

    • Kevin 10:01 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

The victim’s photos went public because a relative put images on social media. The girl’s identity is now subject to a court-ordered publication ban, which is why no media articles use her name.

Police in Quebec rarely provide mugshots, and nobody is allowed to take pictures inside a courtroom, so the only way to get an image of the accused is if you happen to spot them in a van entering or exiting the parking lot.

    • Kate 11:06 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

Kevin, at least one source included her name, which I used in my post. I’ve now removed it.

    • Meezly 13:06 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

That’s interesting. Was the photo made public by the aunt on social media? Even if a photo is made public on social media, wouldn’t media still require permission from the parent/guardian to publish it?

    • Joey 17:24 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

      @Meezly once it’s published, it’s published.

The controversial shipping terminal planned in the east end Hochelaga by Ray‑Mont Logistics will soon be under construction.

    • dhomas 05:58 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

How is this democratic? No one wants this shitty project in the area. Except for the company, Ray-Mont, who’s owners won’t have to live next door to this monstrosity. So if a majority of people don’t want this to happen, why is it happening?

This is NOT the “East End” as in Montreal-Est which is already full of refineries and other such industry. This is in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, a residential area. It’s frustrating that we are powerless to stop this from happening.

    • Kate 08:53 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

Amended the post, dhomas, thank you. Yes, it’s a mess. The answer to your question, I’m afraid, as it usually is in matters like this, is money.

    • dhomas 13:39 on 2022-03-17 Permalink

No worries about the nomenclature, Kate. I don’t think the “East End” has any clearly defined boundaries. But I think it would usually include RDP, P.A.T., Anjou (at least part of it), and Montreal-Est. Or maybe anything east of the 25.

The closest I could find to define it is here: https://mapcarta.com/Montreal/East_End

dhomas, I don’t know if you’ll look back and see this, but I went back into older posts and found a La Presse piece that talks about Ray-Mont suing the city for $373 million. It seems likely to me that the city realized it could not win this one without shelling out vast amounts of cash.

Quebec has tabled a law to lift the state of health emergency but there are a lot of provisos.

Soon, travellers arriving in Canada won’t need to take a Covid test.

I’m going to start a competing event called The Biggest Prick which will involve filling an outdoor swimming pool with gasoline and lighting it on fire. The crowd will be invited to throw their money, and anything else carbon-based, into it. When the fire finally burns out and the smoke has cleared, whichever species is still alive will be declared the winner.

A lot of people were annoyed by the self-service scooters that cropped up here in 2019, but were then ruled out by the city. They won’t be back this year, but Le Devoir says the city is considering welcoming them back as of 2023.

Am I wrong that the problem wasn’t the scooters but rather the users leaving them everywhere? And has anything changed?

(I bike so never used them)

              • Kate 13:48 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

The city never managed to find a way to stop users leaving them around. There’s nothing yet about how this might change in the future.

I’m reading a book at the moment called ‘Fighting Traffic’ about the dawn of the automobile age in the US. The way people received the popularity of the personal car in cities is not unlike how people treated these scooters. Your comment, Kate, without context sounds like it can be applied to cars as well!

I’ve never used on of these scooters, but I think it’s good to have more mobility options.

              • Kate 14:32 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

                True!

I’d also point out that a major element of the success of Bixi is that there are docking stations, so that the bikes are not left leaning against trees or poles or abandoned in other random spots. That element of order makes them fit into the urban fabric in a way that the scooters did not.

              • dhomas 14:47 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

Westmount had Dropbikes for a year or two. They were like Bixi except dockless, like those scooters. I’m not sure when they left Westmount, but it might have been because the bikes were being left in inconvenient places. Or maybe because there isn’t much of a market for bike sharing outside of a wider network (like Bixi’s) in Westmount.

              • James 14:57 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

I hope the scooters don’t come back. They were literally left everywhere.

              • Tim S. 15:38 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

I really don’t like these things. Yes, people leave them everywhere, some people use them irresponsibly on sidewalks, but mostly I don’t get what transport problem they are meant to solve. You have to be reasonably fit to use them in the first place (can you ride one with a bum knee?) and you can’t use them for groceries or anything, and they’re mostly good for short or maybe medium trips. So, as far as I can tell, the only people who use them are youngish people who could walk or bike instead. And yet the scooters still rely on external power sources, they have goodness knows what in their batteries, they require people to drive around and collect them. They’re not a green replacement for cars, they’re a way of encouraging people to rely even more on manufactured, energy consuming products instead of their own two legs.

              • MarcG 16:19 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

Agree with Tim. And haven’t the Bixi electric bikes, which do the same thing, been introduced in the meantime?

              • Chris 21:57 on 2022-03-16 Permalink

                >You have to be reasonably fit to use them…

So? Plenty of people are. That “argument” would apply against bixi as well, even more so.

                >you can’t use them for groceries or anything

What?! Ever heard of a backpack? Not everyone needs to fill an SUV at Costco.

                >they’re mostly good for short or maybe medium trips

Which is what the majority of car trips are.

                >They’re not a green replacement for cars

How do you figure? They take way less energy to both create and operate, and generate less waste at end of life.

                >…rely even more on manufactured, energy consuming products instead of their own two legs

Dude, that ship sailed. Mode share of cycling and walking has been single digits for *decades*. People have not been, are not, and won’t be switching to using their own energy, alas. I wish it weren’t so.

If these scooters can *replace* car trips, I think they’re a win. Hard it say if they can replace as oppose to supplement car trips. i.e. how many people would forgo car ownership if they could own/rent one of these things?
