A demonstration was held Friday against the Ray-Mont Logistics project to build that massive 24/7 shipping terminal in Hochelaga. The company says there will be 30 to 40 trucks a day; Hochelaga-Maisonneuve MNA Alexandre Leduc counters this with an estimate of as many as 1000. Another demo is planned for Saturday.

Update: Which they did. But it’s never wise to get attached to a green space as a park, if it hasn’t yet been declared a park. You’ll get your heart broken.

Mayor Plante said Friday, in a side discussion to the blue line announcement, that she wants a clear promise from CDPQ‑Infra that the city will be included in any future transit planning on the island.

This is so backwards. The transit planning should be happening between artm and city. Cdpqinfra, as a project executor (a design-build-finance-operate partner) should be begging to be included as a consultant in the planning – which is already a bit of conflict of interest, since cdpqinfra should be selected by artm as part of a bidding process after basic planning is finished when trying to find a design-build-operate-Finance Partner.

This whole process is so backwards and doesn’t follow any logic about how the private and public should work together, that the model couldn’t be used in any highly developed country, certainly not in the EU.

I don’t see how they can „export“ their model if it depends on the form of government to be „banana republic“.

It will be a rainy weekend in Montreal, but the St Patrick’s parade has seen worse.

Quebec has confirmed $6.4 billion to complete the five planned blue line stations to Anjou. The work will start next year, with an opening date sometime in 2029.

Another billion is being given to the STM to keep the metro running and pursue the program of retrofitting more of the stations to make them accessible.

It should be noted that many changes have been made to the final plans of the blue line extension. This is mostly done to save on expropriation costs and includes moving the terminus to the East side of the 25 at Anjou city hall (this is in lieu of and not in addition to a stop at Galeries d’Anjou). Also, many edicules have been scrapped in order to achieve further cost savings.
I’m glad it’s being done, but I think the elimination of the Galeries d’Anjou stop is a mistake. Buses could have terminated there or added to the transit options. The 460, for example could have had a terminus at a metro station. The 141 could have passed by the Galeries d’Anjou metro on its way to Honoré-Beaugrand. The 44 could have bridge the gap from the green line at Radisson to the blue line at Galeries d’Anjou. Some Exo buses could have had a stop on the blue line on their way to the green line terminus at Radisson. It’s a compromise, I suppose.

So we’re gonna have two Pie-IX and Viau stations? J/K obviously these new ones will be renamed. Kudos to CTV News for publishing an illegible map, though.

          • DeWolf 15:38 on 2022-03-18 Permalink

@dhomas, it seems the station will be built directly underneath the 25, with the main entrance and bus terminus on the west side (in the mall parking lot) and a secondary entrance on the east side (next to Anjou borough hall).

Yes the Anjou station platforms will be directly under the 25. An entrance will be on either side of the 25.
In the image that DeWolf posted, those grey lines are non-revenue track (east-west line) and a storge depot for trains (north-south line). Quite a lot of infrastructure on the east side of the 25.

The PieIX station design is very advanced because the SRB Pie-IX will have tunnels under the road to directly connect to the new metro station without going outside. Pie-IX will also have two entrances (NW and SE of the intersection).

Generally it’s nice when a metro station spans a barrier and has exits on both sides. In this case they will still be right next to highways, so we’ll see how useful it’ll be.

But man, this line sure is expensive. We’re getting to NYC level costs here…

I recall an argument on this blog: the MUHC was leasing a building on Decarie, on the far side from de la Savane metro station. Some people were saying they preferred driving because it was an unpleasant walk from the station, around to a crosswalk over the autoroute, and back to the building. I think it was when I posted this story.

Not having an exit from that station on the west side was an issue – but then so was renting office space on the far side of the street. It’s a good example of how a map can be misleading. You have to go look at the actual layout.

A church pastor in Ahuntsic has been sentenced to serve 30 months for fraud. Before a certain commenter can weigh in, yes, I’m aware of the irony of punishing a religious leader who took money from a devoted flock in return for no concrete benefit, since in a sense they all do. Let’s take that as read.

The Children’s is preparing to welcome Ukrainian kids who have already had cancer diagnoses and need to go somewhere where their treatment can continue. Le Devoir’s headline includes Ste‑Justine in the story, but their text says very little about that hospital’s preparations.

Not specifically a Montreal story, but I think it’s worthwhile circulating this l’Actualité piece on how residents of Quebec can access so much media at the BAnQ for free – legally. “Stop paying for what you already have!” says the headline.

I’m surprised more people aren’t aware of this, or use them more. Kanopy in particular is great. Streaming movies from classics to obscure arthouse films from around the world, etc. I run it though AppleTV, so it’s big and bold on the livingroom TV and not just something to squint at on the phone or iPad. BanQ access only allows four free movies a month, but there are two of us in this house so that makes eight (we both have memberships).

In our case it doesn’t replace Netflix, Prime, Crave, and AppleTV; more like an adjunct. But a nice one!

Yeah, it’s very nice to have access to at least the “simulacrum print” versions of magazines such as Cook’s Illustrated or the New Yorker. I do find that digital subscriptions to some publications (the NYT, for example) are still worthwhile.

(And FWIW I say this as an author who makes his money from book sale royalties.)

And the lecture series on Kanopy on the plague made for interesting and excellent early-pandemic viewing!

The BAnQ services are amazing. If what I need is not included in their collection, I use their Interlibrary loan service. They will search for and obtain material from other institutions for members. They also have a very responsive purchase suggestion form.

@Daniel thanks for the headup on digital magazines. I had done digital newspapers here but forgot all about magazines. Cooks Illustrated always an interesting read and I had stopped buying it a few years ago.
Banq & Banq Digital is so useful in the 21st century way, so much better than Montreal’s previous iteration of a central library, which was very 1910s in it’s user-services model.

The Gazette’s Linda Gyulai has doggedly pursued the story about owners of undeveloped lots in Pointe‑aux‑Trembles having their land sneakily reclaimed by the city for a couple of years, and now produces a result: an owner who has been paid by the city for his land.
