Charles Émond of the Caisse de dépôt is trying to make some kind of gotcha with his allegation that Mayor Plante changed her mind about the REM de l’Est. If she did, it was because she heeded the chorus of criticism that followed the unveiling of the plans – exactly what a representative of the people is meant to do.

In the article I read (La Presse, if memory serves), he actually says she was completely within her rights to change her mind and that he’s fine with it. But that he finds it strange that she did a complete about-face in the space of a week (between their most recent conversation and yesterday’s announcement). Nuance

There’s smoke in the tunnels, and parts of the green, orange and blue lines are down as I post, emergency buses running.

Update: All lines show normal service by 6:30. The problem was in a circuit box at Lionel‑Groulx.

QMI has been digging into traces of the Russian federation in Montreal that it claims are evidence of espionage. There’s a whole report on QUB.

Starting in 2024, most new buildings in Montreal will have to be zero-emission. As of 2025, buildings over 2000 m2 will also be included.

Part of the reason there’s a construction boom?

To squeak in under the deadline? Could be.

But if they do, they’ll still have to retrofit them to be carbon-zero by 2040.

To be fair the developers get massive grants for this so they have been chasing after LEED certification for quite some time now.

This effectively just means that building will need to be heated by electricity rather than natural gas.

Tuesday is the day of Guy Lafleur’s funeral to be held at 11 am at Mary Queen of the World downtown. Some streets will be closed off around the cathedral. Quebec media sites will be streaming the ceremony. TVA has a minute by minute link.

CBC radio and this Global piece mention a fighter jet flyby at the end of the ceremony. I hope someone warns any refugees that this is in the plans.

The Global piece says the funeral is by invitation only, but some people are lining up at the church and will watch it from outside.

Casual question: shouldn’t a Quebec national funeral not be a secular, humanist ceremony?

Update: Media have all kinds of clips of politicians, hockey players and other notables giving their eulogies.

The new bridge will be lit up bleu blanc rouge Tuesday evening.

          …and don’t forget the CF-18 flyover at 12:45.

I think if we want to honour someone at their funeral, we honour the religion they (or their family) choose. That is not where I’d look for the government to be more secular.

          Blork, thanks for the correction.

          jeather, I suppose you’re right.

The rough estimate is that it costs about $70K per hour to fly a CF-18, which is the minimum amount of time it would take to complete the flyover mission.

          That’s your money.

And don’t forget the carbon emissions. The whole species needs a Darwin award.

Well, they need to fly the jets anyways – the Russians are showing the world what happens when you leave your military to rust. Might as well swing by Montreal. Although with the clouds I heard it but not sure anyone saw it.

The Russian church on St-Joseph in Outremont has received a threatening letter, by implication connected with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Item mentions that Russian churches in other places have also received threats.

How does the Russian Orthodox church (under the Moscow Patriarchate) feel about the creation of the Ukranian Orthodox church in 2014? They believe they’re in a holy war. https://www.economist.com/europe/2022/03/21/russias-orthodox-church-paints-the-conflict-in-ukraine-as-a-holy-war

          steph, what’s your point though?

Putin’s not just waging a war of expansion. He’s in a holy crusade to take back his church, which went through a schism several years ago.

          Link fixed, thanks.

        • Chris 19:52 on 2022-05-04 Permalink

Kevin, sure, but what’s the relation to the Outremont church? Is the argument that because the Russian Orthodox church believes it’s in a holy war that threatening assassination is ok?
