He’s such a mensch. Montreal will suffer a real loss when he retires but I hope one of the people he has been talking to takes over. I really can’t imagine losing such. lovely bookstore to sheer mortality. That said, I hope when Stephen does retire he has all the best life in the world, he is such a delightful guy. He should be comfortable.

Well the mile end is almost certainly going to lose the bookstore. The deal is that he can stay in his current local at an affordable rent until he retires in the next few years. Even if someone takes over it almost certainly won’t be anywhere in the neighbourhood.

Welch started the store in Snowdon, near the Deli, then it was on Sherbrooke Street in NDG, then on the Main near Berson’s Monuments for a long time, before moving to St‑Viateur. So it could thrive somewhere else, but it won’t be Welch’s past a point if Stephen’s not involved.

What a lovely interview. I’m always so pleased when Welch accepts the books I sell (and understand the few that he’d reject). Only another year or so to enjoy this local treasure before he retires…

@Spi you never know, Saint Viateur has been gentrified nearly beyond recognition but Bernard still has lots to offer and still has that pre-gentrification Mile End flavour (for now).
