A CultMTL writer did a Montreal staycation last month and a second part this week, staying at two of the city’s poshest hotels and eating at posh eateries.

Oh.. let me write an article about how the tourism business was jettisoned by the government during COVID, can’t find qualified personnel and the consequences… without writing about it.
Hotels had to layoff their staff, who found other jobs and those who returned didn’t have the training nor abilities of the previous staff. Hotels were offered LOANS from the government instead of real help… Loans that had to be repaid. You can’t do hotel renovations and maintenance using loans, it’s just increasing the problem, not solving it.

Customer service in Montreal really is a special level of shitty. I know when I travel I tend to look at things through rose-coloured glasses, but I can think of many instances of being treated well or politely and it’s much rarer in similar situations in Montreal.

If you want to hear what it sounds like, and hear from people who speak it and “code switch” in and out of it, this episode of the Pigments Forts podcast is a good primer: https://www.qub.ca/radio/balado/pigments-forts?audio=1000117420.

Cardinal Ouellet’s alleged sexual misconduct has sparked a surge in complaints of similar misconduct by other members of the clergy to the ombudsman of the Montreal diocese.
Update: The Pope says there’s not enough evidence against Ouellet to proceed with an investigation.

A man was stabbed overnight, apparently by a woman. (Radio‑Canada says it was near Atwater metro, but it was at the corner of St‑Jacques, which puts it closer to Lionel‑Groulx – whoever wrote this doesn’t know the city.) CTV says there was an argument between a man and a woman when she stabbed him (and at least they situate it near L‑G).

As I post there’s a fire at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. La Presse says it’s a minor fire and that part of the building has been under renovation for some time.
Update: Water and smoke damage mean the season opener at TNM will be delayed.
Mayor Plante has offered her support, emphasizing TNM’s cultural importance to the city.
