The construction of two compost treatment plants has been halted for two months because of a dispute involving two different contractors. The installations are in St‑Laurent and Montreal East; the one in St‑Laurent is said to be 90% complete.

This is a shame, really. Compost is the one thing we currently know how to dispose of effectively. We all know almost everything we put in the recycling bin doesn’t get recycled and either ends up in some other country for them deal with or in the same place as what we put in our garbage bins. I hope they get this resolved quickly.

One of the installations is meant to produce agricuturally useful compost, but the other is a biomethanization plant, and I don’t know how that fits in, in terms of greenhouse gas.

Burning the methane from the plant will produce CO2. However, the carbon in the methane is coming from organic matter that derived the carbon from CO2 taken out of the air by plants recently. There should be no net addition of CO2 to our current atmosphere, so the process shouldn’t have any climate warming effect as long as it doesn’t leak significant amounts of methane.
