Dental costs are holding up surgery
In advance of transplants and some forms of chemotherapy, the medical team insists that a patient get their dental situation tidied up – but many patients can’t afford to do that because it isn’t covered by the RAMQ, so lifesaving procedures can’t be done. A CHUM doctor lays out the problem.

I did not know this. I’m very surprised though I knew about gum disease and heart health. This needs to be covered by RAMQ. Of course it does.

I’m fortunate enough never to have heard of it either, but as I was reading it I was thinking it made sense. You can’t administer treatments that lower a person’s immunity if their mouth is full of reservoirs of potential infection. This doctor isn’t asking for people to get full restorative dental work on the RAMQ – just to have their basic dental hygiene looked after.
