The STM is giving us notice that the tunnel degradation noticed on Monday is an indication that major maintenance work will have to be done on the metro infrastructure over the next few years.

A young Montreal man was found dead in Ontario and it’s been ruled a homicide. Cops are trying to work out how he got there.

Following from recent discussions here about the SQDC, it seems relevant to note this report that SPVM cops have dismantled a group of illegal cannabis sellers who specifically targeted teenagers. Candy and cookies are also mentioned – things even adults can’t buy at the SQDC.

No, but you can at Kanesatake

      • Blork 16:25 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

        …or through Canada Post.

      • shawn 18:10 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

Yes you can buy stuff online so easily. Did anyone else spot the posters on telephone poles in Mile End for this Vancouver online dispensary for magic mushrooms, Utopia? I tried some microdose gummies. Not really for me. Tho the shipment + customer service was perfect.

      • EG 19:59 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

They had an item on CBC the other day about people (adults) microdosing mushrooms and getting them mail-order from Vancouver.

      • Kate 20:21 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

The outfit shawn mentioned is online and will ship.

      • Mark Côté 21:40 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

I’ve been wondeing if Canada Post doesn’t know about the mail-order stuff from BC or if it’s not actually their jurisdiction since weed is provincially regulated.

      • Mark Côté 21:42 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

Although that question wouldn’t apply to mushrooms, which are still entirely illegal, I suppose.

      • Kate 22:14 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

How illegal are shrooms? I’ve never heard of cops busting crime rings dealing in shrooms.

      • Ephraim 07:49 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

        Officially… illegal https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/substance-use/controlled-illegal-drugs/magic-mushrooms.html

Reality, very hard to actually deal with, as they are mushrooms. And there is at least one case in front of the courts already. Likely to be the next legalized drug, first for prescription and then for non-therapeutic use. But it’s so small a market and so hard to prove that I doubt the police even care…. they look for drugs like click-bait… and a few grams of ‘shrooms aren’t going to get them a big headline, which they can use to justify more money… instead of the body cams to protect themselves from abusive citizens and social workers to help lighten the load of things they shouldn’t have to deal with and aren’t trained to handle, like domestic abuse

      • Mark Côté 08:05 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

They are Schedule III which means they are illegal but not viewed as being as “bad” as, say, heroine or cocaine. They aren’t the kind of thing someone would consume regularly like meth or coke or such, so I imagine the amount mushrooms are trafficked must be far lower than other drugs. They also aren’t associated with the same kind of health and social problems, so in both cases that would (again, I assume) make them lower priority on the enforcement side.

There have been power outages around town Tuesday, although Hydro‑Quebec says power’s already being restored gradually. Explanatory tweet.

Four new bus lanes are being created in various parts of town.

Meantime, the lowest bid for extending the SRB Pie-IX from Pierre‑de‑Coubertin down to Notre‑Dame is coming in at almost twice the allotted budget.

Anyone know why they didn’t go with a tram for this?

        • Peter 13:27 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

This a bit OT but does anyone know what’s up with the new daily parking scheme in the Plateau borough? I got the flyer in my mailbox yesterday. It seems to me that letting tourists use resident parking spots is a big win for AirBnB owners. And another step towards turning our neighborhoods into theme parks.

        • Ephraim 13:43 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

@Peter This has been around for a few months already. AirBnB… well at least the legal ones that rent out full apartments are really limited to St-Denis, St-Laurent and a few other main streets. Also, if you find that there isn’t enough resident only parking, just call the city… a few complaints and voila, they move the signs and make more. They will continue to do this until the point at which every resident is going to need a street permit.

        • shawn 13:44 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

Well, I hope that’s not it. I am in favour of the idea simply because when family visits or even contractors, it makes it easier to find legal parking.

        • CE 14:00 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

@Ephram, I’m sure they’ll put the tram in once they’ve finished the tram on Parc and Côte-des-Neiges.

@Peter, non residents have been able to park in resident spots for a long time, you just needed to buy a sticker at the dep, scratch off the dates, and put it in your window. Now you have to pay at the machines.

        • Peter 14:09 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

@Ephraim Thanks for the info, I didn’t realize this was already active. RE AirBnB I strongly suspect it’s still very easy to flout the rules. I noticed several full-time AirBnb’s near my apartment where the CITQ number doesn’t turn up on the bonjourquebec.com search. I wrote the CITQ and they told me having a publically searchable number is optional.

        • Ephraim 16:01 on 2023-04-25 Permalink

@Peter – Yes, it is optional… but report it to Revenu Quebec. They are supposed to be in charge of looking for the illegals. (My complaints about them not doing their job, notwithstanding)

@CE – I’m more likely to be hit by a Penny Farthing being ridden by Jeff Bezos’s himself than the tramway will be built on Parc Avenue. And yes, those scratch off cards were annoying. Some countries used to have that kind of thing instead of parking meters, except you pull tab the time and date. You put a card up for each hour of parking that you needed. Simple, but annoying as hell. The Plateau’s old system, you had to stick it on the street side in the window… with the new system, you put it on the dash on the street side. But at least you can get it at any meter. We used to try to pick up a few and Pharmaprix would have 2 in stock at a time. It was annoying if you needed for a few days in a row.

Another car was torched late Monday, this one in the Point. At this rate, the “probable arson attacks” layer of the incidents map will be dense with icons by the end of the year.

The green line is running normally again Tuesday morning after overnight inspections showed the cracks in the tunnel are insignificant.

In other metro-related news: the direct access to the Eaton Centre from the McGill metro quai (that I was kvetching about in another post) has been reopened.

Not sure how to share images here, so here goes:

I thought about dhomas’ other post yesterday, when I was there, but didn’t go looking for it because I thought it was maybe still closed. I’ll look for it next time.

@GC The direct access to the Eaton Centre is on the Honoré-Beaugrand direction quai, if you go looking for it. It’s at the very tail end of the train. It was pretty handy when I used to work in the Eaton Centre (many, many moons ago).

          • GC 22:54 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

Good to know. When I’m coming from home, it will generally be the other direction, but I’ll use it eventually.
