New Airbnb rules come into force
New rules governing Airbnb-type short‑term rentals come into force September 1st.
I’m still seeing combination key boxes attached to some buildings around Villeray, the unmistakable sign of a short‑term rental.
Update: The Journal says the new law doesn’t have teeth.

TBF there’s a box bolted into the brick on my apartment, which hasn’t been a short term rental for years. Landlord doesn’t even know the combination, nor if there’s anything in it, nor if what’s in it unlocks the door.

The fine for AirBnB, Expedia’s VRBO etc is $100K per violation. And for the person advertising, it’s $50K. The PDF files with the permit are signed with government certs. I don’t know if these companies are going to risk $100K a listing for a few bucks.
Though, from what I understand, some places in Old Montreal changed to hotel status, but now the government is going after them for the requirement for a front desk.
