Kid hit by puck in practice dies
An 11-year-old who was hit in the neck by a puck during a practice Tuesday in St‑Eustache has died.
That’s quite some slapshot for that level of hockey.

Tragic. They say he was wearing all proper equipment (though the “neck” (technically throat) protector mostly only protects the front of the neck, and it’s unclear which part of the neck was hit), so that must have been a very hard shot. You would be surprised how often people choose not to wear one, even during games, even though it’s required for all players in Quebec, even during practice, after two deaths in the 1980s and many neck lacerations, and is required in Ontario too, but is apparently not nationally (only required during games, and only for minors and women). (Though after the death of that player in the UK this fall, more provinces are adopting the requirement for all on-ice time, and I bet it will be national soon enough.) I’m honestly surprised this doesn’t happen more often.

The neck protector is designed to prevent cuts, they are made of a pliable fabric and won’t offer any protection from impact. Every minor player is required to wear one and the refs are good about enforcing that rule. This poor kid probably got hit the way Trent McCleary did although there are very very few 11 year olds who can shoot a puck hard enough to crush a windpipe. https://www.cbc.ca/playersvoice/entry/trent-mccleary-the-shot-that-almost-killed-me
