A driver who crashed into two police cars then into a tree in Lafontaine Park Friday afternoon was arrested and will be charged with driving under the influence. No news on how the tree is doing.

      Tree was treated for shock.

We really should trace this problem back to the source. It’s one thing to go after those who are under the influence, but we really need to get to the root of the problem by going after the influencers. That’s right; let’s go after the influencers. Tik Tok, Instagram… LET’S TAKE DOWN THE INFLUENCERS!!!

Blork, you’re overdue for your injection of Antiboomerene. Hold still.

Blork, there are lots of inebriated people in parc Lafontaine who do no damage to the trees whatsover. It was the presence of “a car” that destroyed the day that poor tree was having.

There are more potholes on city streets now than at any time since 2019, but the mild weather means some repairs are already happening.

A Superior Court judge has ordered the Catholic‑run St Raphael’s palliative care centre to offer medical aid in dying like all others do in Quebec. The church would prefer that dying people suffer till the very last moment.

A march to mark International Women’s Day will start at 5:30 pm at Dorchester Square. CTV also has a selection of photos of Women’s Day marches over the years – incidentally reminding us that some previous Women’s Days have been cold and snowy.

Seems every time we change the clocks, there will be articles asking when the hell we’re going to stop changing the clocks, but then we keep doing it, even though it messes with everyone’s circadian rhythms.

Mexico stopped it and we should too.

          • Kate 17:30 on 2024-03-08 Permalink

I’m afraid Canada won’t stop doing it until the U.S. does, but the U.S. is too set in its ways in some matters (cf. Imperial measurements).

(Yes, I know that a few places in Canada and the U.S. don’t change clocks, but they’re not dominant enough to carry the rest of their countries with them.)

I will vote for whatever party at the provincial or federal level commits to actually doing this. I struggle with it, both in spring and fall.

Almost everyone agrees we should, but nobody wants to do it first.

The problem is that half the people want to go permanently on standard time and half permanently on summer time. And a lot of the people would prefer the switching to the permanent one they don’t like (like me, I prefer permanent summer to switching to permanent standard). So whenever an option to select one comes up, enough people prefer the status quo to switching, even if a majority doesn’t prefer the current system. And then add in coordination with other provinces and states, and here’s where we are.

I don’t care if we permanently end up in one or the other, as long as it ends

          • jeather 16:20 on 2024-03-09 Permalink

I care very deeply about being on daylight savings permanently and would probably prefer to continue to switch than to be on standard year round, as a data point for Nicholas.

In order of preference, for me:
            1) permanent standard time
            2) permanent summer time
            3) switching at the dates we used to switch (Oct & April)
            4) status quo: switching at the current dates (Nov & March)

I believe we can end this timeless debate by allowing anyone who likes DST to change their clocks and everyone who is against it, simply keeps their clocks at standard time.

I’m with Kevin. I don’t care which one we pick. I’m not a farmer, so it makes little difference to me.

Court documents show that the company that runs Just for Laughs owes nearly $22.5 million.

Adding later: Taylor C. Noakes on why he thinks the bankruptcy of JfL makes no sense. Where did all that public money go?

Also: Artists who were under contract to JfL when it collapsed may never be paid.

It would be nice if the article mentioned how much the assets are worth, so we can know if they’re slightly or very underwater. Obviously the brand, which is intangible, is worth something, but still. And if they’re very underwater, the Bell+Evenko/Geoff Molson ownership stake is likely to be mostly wiped out, and National Bank will take over, though I’d expect either a cash infusion or the bank to sell it back to the ownership team, as a bank doesn’t want to run something like this.

Montreal public health is launching a measles immunization campaign in schools, although it is not mandatory. I’d be curious to hear what percentage of kids are opted out by their families.
