St-Henri building collapses
Firefighters came out Monday when a building in St‑Henri collapsed. CTV says it was “under construction” but the building does not look new.

Under renovation. The exterior wall seems to have fallen off. Possibly, there was another house next to it once, which prevented that, but it was knocked down when they put in the highway. Possibly, someone did not attach the wall to the floors too well, and it’s been a disaster waiting to happen for decades.

I lived on Cazelais for a couple months a long time ago. The houses were in rough shape but very cheap. The highway is right there so I’m sure the constant vibration isn’t easy on those old houses.

I worked with a guy a few years ago who was living around there, so I was interested to see his name as a byline on one of the photos, while hoping the collapse didn’t affect him personally.

My brother used to live on Cazelais, it’s … special.
Regardless of the hows and whys the work being done on that parking lot must have been pretty intense to “trigger” the collapse. I can only imagine how pleasant it must have been to live next to that kind of work, feeling your apartment shaking.

The reports say no one was home, but I wonder whether the tenants would be able to recover any of their property, and whether any of them had pets.
The most recent Streetview image shows that the building was up for sale in November 2022.

I think I saw an IG post saying the occupants had 30 minutes to gather possessions before being evacuated. Half an hour while your experiencing trauma to figure out what you need to make do for an indefinite period of time (they’ll tell you to plan for months but you won’t really get it) and to grab any and all keepsakes and sentimental items.
@Ian, I used to live in a very solid building that was adjacent to new construction project. Wasn’t the bigger fan of the summer they spent pile-driving.

It would probably take me 30 minutes to get my cat into her carrier. She isn’t a fan.
My old colleague who lives nearby writes: “An old friend recently moved out of that building and into the building next door. His new place is showing signs of damage. So he’ll have to move out.”
