The city plans to lend money, interest-free, to 150 households having trouble paying their rent.
Although how, if you can’t pay your rent now, you can expect to pay the city back while paying your rent in the future, is not made clear.

La Presse talks to a couple of people living near homeless camps, who are unsettled by some of the conditions and the uncertainty of principles guiding the situation. One man lives near a camp beside a railway line where tanker cars often pass, while the camp has open fires; another camp is encroaching on a kids’ play park. And promises of toilets have not materialized.

I briefly thought, as I saw that the impending heat wave was the only local news of substance Monday morning, that it was too bad there wasn’t any other news, then remembered a week ago and that having news is not always desirable.
Afterthought: Nothing’s been announced for a couple of weeks about the water main issue, maybe because we had so much rain that nobody was using tap water on lawns and gardens. But with a heat wave coming, our water consumption is likely to rise. Would be nice if the city gave us an update on how the work is going.

At this point rain barrels should be worked into the building code and become mandatory, particularly for suburban, residential, detached or semi-detached housing, and everyone should be mandated to use rainwater collected in barrels for lawn watering purposes.
It’s a method to divert at least some stormwater (particularly away from foundations), while providing an alternative to water consumption during dry spells – and climate change means we’ll have plenty of both.

Also, how far does $5000 really get you…I guess it can keep you afloat for a bit. I suppose how you’re expected to pay it back depends on how long until you have to pay it back. Sometimes, a span of a year or more can give you time to make more money or find a better job….but I’m really not sure.
