NDG: NIMBY over BIXI
Some NDG residents are complaining about a Bixi station that’s been placed nearby, because of “noise and safety concerns” – yes, we all know how Bixi attracts the criminal element.

Like where do you even begin. Anyway, this is a temporary station to accommodate some construction around the corner.

The BIXI station across from my home has attracted groups of youth who steal the bikes and break the docks by shaking/slamming them till they break loose. It’s a bit disconcerting to see but I think “safety concern” is a bit overblown.
It’s also true that there is noise from customers slamming the bikes to dock them. I don’t really notice it any more.

As someone who is sensitive to that kind of noise I can understand the annoyance. But given that this is temporary it has “slow news day” written all over it. Also: the person wondering why a service intended for residents was installed in a “residential area” is just silly.

FYI the ‘safety’ thing has nothing to do with juvenile delinquents, it’s purported concern that motorists will be shocked to discover a Bixi stand and presumably run over multiple small children over and over, i.e., classic concern trolling.

If it’s a residential street drivers should be watching out anyways. The residents should be happy for the traffic calming.

I’ve used the racks on Victoria, Melville and Northcliffe (don’t know if that one’s still there). There used to be one right outside 5100 de maisonnueve, but I guess they moved it across the street to Grey. Nobody complained at those other racks.I guess these are too close to the residents, but the one on Northcliffe was right outside an apartment building and they didn’t say anything so what gives?

While I welcome the Bixi racks on my street I have wondered exactly how giving up prime corners to a commercial enterprise is determined and remunerated. I suspect it might be kind of along the lines of cab stands, ie, a calculated loss to improve the network overall.
