Three SQ and two SPVM police have received slaps on the wrist for a car chase in 2018. They were chasing down a man driving with a suspended license, who, in trying to get away, hit and seriously injured a woman clearing snow from her front steps. In 2023 Nancy Carrier spoke about the consequences of her injuries.

The police ethics commission declared that driving with a suspended license was not a serious enough matter to risk a car chase.

What the item doesn’t say is why justice grinds so slowly at the police ethics commission. Or is there such a monstrous backlog of alleged ethics violations?

I’m confused, because the Journal article makes it sound like it was a police car that hit Carrier…but LaPresse presents it differently.

You’re right. In the 2023 piece the Journal definitely says it was a patrol car, but La Presse describes it as the fugitive’s car hitting her. The second photo in the Journal suggests that several cars may have piled up in front of the woman’s house.

Man. It’s bad enough if the fugitive hit her during the risky chase, but if the cops did it themselves…

The CBC article doesn’t actually mention any names, which is also a bit odd, but it sounds like the same incident. And their account of it lines up more with the one in LaPresse.

With recent news that Montreal has lower crime rates than the Canadian average, it feels like our media are scrambling to find the bad news – the youth crime numbers came up first, and now cases of mistaken identity in gang conflicts.
