It’s a truly slow news week, so everyone is covering the idea of sprucing up Chinatown: video from CityNews, optimism from Global and a slightly more subdued report from CTV.

The Gazette considers Chinatown’s future with a particularly idiotic quote from Claude Pinard, councillor for St‑Jacques and executive committee chair: “If we cannot bring back Chinatown, how can we make sure Montreal shines internationally?”

That the city must shine internationally is taken for granted (it’s a Coderre‑era notion), but that this depends on Chinatown is simply odd. I suppose its proximity to Old Montreal, as one of the city’s top attractions, is the main reason for this concern.

Well, at least Pinard didn’t talk about Montreal being/staying a “world class” city, a cringe claim I’d rather leave to Toronto.

      Fair enough.

Two teenagers were killed in a car crash in Laval early Wednesday after police tried to stop them over a missing licence plate. Police emphasize they didn’t initiate a chase. A third teenager remains in critical condition.

No word in either article on whether the car was stolen. That’s also the trouble with cars without plates, it’s way harder to track down fleeing people later, and yet they still didn’t chase.

Also some weird stuff in the TVA piece. They say that it was “quelques centaines de mètres” from the interception to the crash, even though it’s 1.7 km, close to the 2 km CTV used. Also the random business owner they talked to, an “amateur de voitures” and “père de famille” who owns a car industry business complaining that cars on this 5-6 lane arterial regularly go too fast. Well yes, that’s the point of this road, to go very fast, and that’s the impression I’ve gotten the few times I’ve taken a bus on it. That’s what the people want, apparently; there are ways to fix it if people want to slow it down. But obviously going fast, well, people are going 50, 60, but looking at this crash, it was way more than that. Different kind of problem.

The VIN will tell you the ownership of the vehicle.

The Hudson-Oka ferry is to resume service this week after a long downtime.

Ah nice, I was beginning to wonder if the season was a bust.
