The city’s blue-collar workers are to vote on a strike mandate Saturday morning.

The old Chinese hospital on St‑Denis in Villeray is going to be demolished soon, replaced with a new building offering 40 to 50 affordable rental units.
I hope they at least save the red tiles from the building and find a way to re‑use them on the façade of the new one.
Incidentally, I recently spotted a piece defining the distinction between social and affordable housing. This will be on the exam.

The Grands Prix cyclistes to be held here and in Quebec City next week are likely to attract protest because of the participation of a team called Israel‑Premier Tech, owned by Sylvan Adams, a onetime Montrealer who’s a strong supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump. Adams calls protesters terrorists.

A major fire in western NDG on Friday morning has put 16 households into the street. CTV headlines it as Montreal West but it isn’t.

The STM’s maintenance workers, weary of delays in getting a new contract, have announced a strike: a 14‑day overtime refusal, starting September 22.

CultMTL presents what it calls the 14th annual Student Survival Guide (PDF) although – like its annual survey of the best things in town – it’s a tradition inherited from the Montreal Mirror. The Survival Guide is a good compendium of living affordably in the city, although wistfully evoking a time when the cost of living in Montreal was not the burden it is now.

The city contracted with engineering firms to redesign the Camillien‑Houde, and although this project is now postponed sine die, that bill still has to be paid.
This is slightly annoying, but with every change of political leadership, inevitably some pet projects of the old administration get dropped. But the invoices don’t get cancelled because there’s a new mayor on the throne.

I almost wish PM would let Norris off his leash just long enough to try to explain this one away.
Does this count as a scandal yet?

Getting a lot closer… all they had to do was not explicitly reject the main recommendation from the OCPM.

QMI noticed recently that Walmart and Amazon sell Hells Angels merch, and now Quebec has asked them to stop selling it.
The CTV headline says the retailers were “told” to stop selling it, but I don’t believe Quebec has the legal power to make demands about retailers’ offerings. Maybe the Hells could be coaxed to sue whoever’s hijacked their trademark?
…I find that you can buy a full patch kit on Etsy, too.

Many municipalities have by-laws prohibiting the display of gang colors, specifically targeting biker gangs. I wonder if they’d ticket non-gang members for sporting the logos. I wonder if the days of bikers going after non-members with violence for wearing their jackets still goes on (admittingly I’ve borrowed this idea from movies).
Nicholas
Can the government ban the sale of a Swastika, or the logo of ISIS, or other similar images? The HA are a designated criminal enterprise. There also could be a difference between someone selling it and someone wearing it. I don’t know the answer, but it’s not like telling retailers they can’t sell fruit. (We do restrict sales of cigarettes, alcohol, etc.)
Kate
Could Quebec send a mise en demeure to Walmart or Amazon demanding they remove certain items? Would either company consider Quebec’s request/demand something they needed to obey?
Chris
These companies always calculate that it’s better to loose a few pennies not selling certain merch than having a whole population/government pissed at you. Doesn’t really matter if it’s a left or right wing cause either.
Nicholas: likely they can; we have rather weak free speech laws here alas. But they won’t need to go that far.

That etsy listing has now vanished.
