The Longueuil policeman who shot Nooran Rezayi dead on Sunday is on indefinite leave.

This piece also goes on to say that the teenagers said they were “on their way to film a video in the woods nearby.”

Oddly, this piece continues “the SPVM launched a parallel investigation based on information about activities in the neighbourhood that they said they obtained Sunday, before the shooting.” There’s no explanation what this means or how it bears on the Longueuil cop being trigger‑happy.

Just so tragic. Let alone the racism and violence that is clearly deeply embedded in the culture of the police, but what about the sheer incompetence?

It’s unusual for the BEI to make a public statement, but the shooting death of unarmed Nooran Rezayi on Sunday is an extreme case. Update here later, if it’s even possible that a coherent explanation can be made.

…Well, the BEI have spoken and have not started with feeble excuses, at least. None of the boys was armed. The only gun recovered from the site was the police officer’s own. They did collect a baseball bat and some black hoodies*. I look forward to hearing about what kind of prank the boys may have been planning before the gunshots.**

    *The French word is cagoule.
**Below, someone suggests they could have been planning to make a video.

      This news enrages me.
      1) who is the Karen who called this in to the Police?
      2) what kind of police officer opens fire before even seeing a weapon?

The only outcomes of this story will be paid administrative leave for the officer, and an increased Police budget.

Journal spoke to one person who said they and many people called 9-1-1 after seeing multiple youths wearing black hoodies https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2025/09/22/la-police-de-longueuil-tue-sur-un-ado-de-15-ans—cetait-un-bebe–dit-son-pere

Some of the kid’s friends said they were shooting a video in the park and I have to wonder if they were doing a school project.

Maybe filming a rap video? Very trendy to wear masks and wield weapons.

My one experience with the Longueuil police was waiting for the bus after a house party and one of their finest pulled up and searched my backpack. I’m a 40-something white dude. Can’t say I find this story very surprising.

Kevin, just hoodies? I was trying to find the best translation for “cagoule” and it came up “balaclava” but there’s a conceptual distance between a hoodie and a face‑concealing balaclava.

      Kate
I’ve seen some translations as ski mask — but there’s a popular book in high schools now called La Cagoule — which portrays the main character as wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

Has Projet Montreal revised its position on body cams?

    • maggie rose 14:28 on 2025-09-23 Permalink

This has made top news in The Guardian international edition. Devastating for the parents.

@Joey Good question, although this happened in Longueuil. I can’t seem to find anything about Catherine Fournier’s position on body cameras.

Wonder if this will become an election issue in either city.

Regardless of whether ‘cagoules’ meant hoodies or ski masks, the only ‘weapons’ were bats? This merited a shooting of an unarmed kid? This debate literally has nothing to do with the shooting and if some nervous type called 911 about it that still doesn’t merit the tactical squad approach. This isn’t just a lapse in judgment, it’s a panic response.

      Here’s the Guardian piece.

      One baseball bat was mentioned.

@Ian — I can’t help but wonder if the fear mongering about crime and safety we’ve been seeing since the pandemic influenced both the decision of neighbours to call 911 and the police’s disproportionate response. There are a lot of people out there irrationally terrified of crime even though violent crime rates are low. When you read the JdM or go on social media you can understand why: they make Montreal sound like a war zone.

Ok, so the proper definition of cagoule is “Coiffure qui couvre la tête et le cou, ne laissant qu’une partie du visage à découvert” Thing is, “une partie du visage” could be only the eyes or the eyes and nose, or eyes, nose and mouth, but in all cases covers the cheeks, forehead, chin, neck…

So what do they mean by cagoule ? a hoodie or a ski mask ? could be either, the word in itself is ambiguous. If the choice was done on purpose or just someone who who googled “hoodie en français” and chose the first result, who knows.

    • Daisy 11:57 on 2025-09-24 Permalink

I’ve always heard hoodies being called “kangarous.”

What does it matter whether he was wearing a this or a that- what you wear is not a capital offense, and even if it was, a cop is not permitted to be the executioner- this was a murder and he deserves to be charged accordingly.

La Presse says that 500 kids have been injured on streets around their schools in Quebec over the last five years. They’ve made a list of the most hazardous spots and explained how intersections are being made safer.

I was almost one of those statistics. I don’t remember the car hitting me, just waking up in the hospital.

    • Kate 09:18 on 2025-09-23 Permalink

My sister also was one – longer than five years ago. She was hit by a car but was bundled up in winter clothes and boots so she basically bounced. Still, no fun for her. I remember her on the stretcher, saying to me “Am I going to die?” and telling her she’d be all right.

Valérie Plante says that, in ten years’ time, her administration will be better appreciated. Most media have been running end‑of‑term pieces about Plante, CBC also posting an exit interview.

Soraya Martinez Ferrada would loosen the rules limiting short‑term rentals, directly contradicting her earlier claim to being a mayor of housing.
