This sounds like part of a Tintin story: a cache of jewels from the Habsburgs has turned up in a Quebec bank, although the specifics are not revealed here. They were thought to have been stolen or lost years ago.

The STM’s union representing 1,300 admin and professional workers has filed a strike notice for November 19 and 21.

The sale of STM monthly passes declined for this month, which should not be a surprise.

I’ve always bought a monthly pass, except for this month.
I live in the suburbs, without a car. The STM is how I get into town, and how I get almost everywhere. I haven’t been on a bus/metro this month yet. Unless I cram myself onto a crowded bus during the limited hours, I don’t know if I’ll get anywhere any distance away until the strike is over.
I’m already wondering how I’ll get to my two appointments this month. A combination of travelling during limited hours, and taking taxis that I don’t really have the money for, I guess. (Bixi and the local trains aren’t really an option for me.)
And I heard that Covid cases are rising, and with the shot costing money and fewer people getting the shot, and more people being crammed together on public transit, it makes me think that Covid cases will rise even more soon, and that worries me.
Sorry for the long post. I guess I’m expressing my bottled-up frustrations.
JP
Lots of bottled-up frustration at my workplace too. I typically use a combination of metro and car to get around (and I know it’s a privilege) but the metro part is key for me too….I’m angry and frustrated too as are many people I know….

One convenience for Pierrefonds is the REM will be running starting in eight days, and isn’t affected by the strike. Along with Bixi, that will provide some options. Of course Bixi’s regular season ends the same day the REM opens, and though they’ve promised to keep stations running a bit later in the zones they plan to stay open, nothing yet about the rest of the region. It would be really nice if they kept it open through the end of the strike in Pierrefonds, western Laval and Two Mountains.
EmilyG
It’s too bad that the part of Pierrefonds I live in isn’t too near to a REM or Bixi station.

As I work standard business hours and commute at rush hour, I bought a monthly pass anyway. I’m fine for getting to and from work, but I’m not able to participate in many leisure and other activities outside of work.

I still have to get an ABC pass to use the rem to get into town. I got a bixi pass for getting to work in time at 6am. The strike has really hit shift workers the most.

And students. Cegep and university class start times are throughout the day, unlike high school and primary.

TVA says it has observed an increase in metro passengers leaping turnstiles and says it’s in protest of the strike.

I no longer commute to work since I work from home. However, if I did need to commute to work, I wouldn’t be very happy paying 105$ for the month of November with the level of service currently being offered. I can kinda understand why people are not willing to pay for the whole month and jumping turnstiles.
Kate
Also working from home, and also agree.
CE
I don’t work from home and have irregular hours that generally don’t correspond with the STM operating hours. Luckily November is a slow month for me but the days I do need to get around have been tough, especially with all the cold rain we’ve been getting.
Ian
There is a very noticeable increase in the number of vehicles on the road, rush hour seems to be starting an hour earlier and ending at least 2 hours later. Lots more accidents, too. Should be interesting if there is snow on the ground Monday morning given that most people won’t have their winter tires on yet.

Concordia is tightening its belt in response to the drop in foreign and out‑of‑province students. It’s deferring sabbaticals and won’t be renewing some teaching contracts, offering retirement packages to some full‑time faculty.

A G&M article about this says they don’t want to reveal the specific bank because they’re a bit spooked after the recent heist at the Louvre.

It would be pretty cool if they went in exhibition at the musée nationale.

The descendants have said that they would like to display them in Canada as a thank you to the country for taking in the empress and for safeguarding the jewels.

When I first read the headline, I thought that the family also had no idea where they were. Which was not the case, but it’s still an interesting story.
