“Asked for comment, a spokesperson for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority said the agency and Hydro-Québec have a long-term agreement that is legally binding. She declined to provide additional thoughts.”
Here’s an additional thought for her – NAFTA/CUSMA are supposed to be legally binding as well.
Trump’s tariffs are also illegal in another way: only Congress is supposed to do tariffs, the exception for the executive to touch them was meant for war, his bullshit fentanyl excuse is just that, bullshit.
Trump knows people will obey his decrees without reference to law or constitutional conventions. It’s pointless to say now “this is illegal” because he is the law.
@Kate I am amazed at how many really bright commentators seem to miss out on this. The point is to do illegal things – lots of them, unpredictably – to demonstrate that you can get away with anything. Tariffs are doubly useful to Trump because they create economic chaos – chaos first, catastrophe second – that he can use to justify more law-breaking. Next thing you know, it’s full-on fascist dictatorship. So many smart folks are not seeing the forest for the trees. Yes the tariffs are dumb, yes they are based on made-up lies, yes he is doing the opposite of what he promised, etc.. Those are, ultimately, details. We have to keep our eyes on the big picture…
