I was kind of flinching from collecting reactions to the Canadiens’ decision to make a land acknowledgment but I don’t have to, because CultMTL’s Lorraine Carpenter has done it for us.

MBC is as eye-rolly as ever, I see.

    • MarcG 20:25 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

Crazy that someone thinks 400 years is a long time.

    • Raymond Lutz 21:17 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

These ‘land acknowledgements’ are just woke corporate virtual signalling. Let me know when the owners do something like donate the land to an indigenous charity. No, easier to say some pretty words to placate the mob, and continue on like usual.

    • Kate 08:54 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

Chris, yes, it’s a gesture. But it’s a gesture with effects – see how it’s getting some people riled up just to be reminded that they and their ancestors have no historical claim on this land. (Or as Ted Rutland just tweeted: “I’d like to acknowledge that white people own everything at all times and that even a small, symbolic show of respect to another people sends many of us into a tizzy.”)

Change begins with gestures and changes of attitude.

    • walkerp 14:09 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

Chris, if it’s just signalling to placate the “mob”, why is the actual majority freaking out so much?

    • GC 17:25 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

If it’s triggering the racists, it sounds like the right thing to do.

CDPQ-Infra has opened bids on constructing the REM de l’Est.

And work is proceeding on the Lacordaire station of the blue line.

Huh. So uh, no BAPE at all this time?

    • Spi 18:52 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

Did they wait for the BAPE to start/finish before putting out RFP’s for the current REM?

    • Kate 19:36 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

A Le Devoir piece from May of this year says the BAPE review is scheduled for early next year.

    • mare 21:58 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

BAPE is just a formality generating a report for a bottom drawer somewhere.

Since the rentrée, traffic jams are said to be back to pre-Covid levels.

And yet public transport usage is still way down (last I checked). That does not bode well.

    • Kate 08:56 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

A lot of people must feel safer in their own little bubble in a car – even if they’re commuting to a job where they’re working alongside other people.

    • Chris 11:46 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

Well, not just “feel” safer, but they are objectively safer from covid alone in their car.

    • Mark Côté 14:25 on 2021-10-20 Permalink

As Kate says, it is just “feeling” safer in the larger sense if you are driving to work side-by-side with a bunch of other people.

That said I don’t know what percentage of people driving around are going to less-safe workplaces. I admit that recently I have been using my car more now that I am doing a bit of light socliazation because public transit does significantly increase the number of people I’m around on a weekly basis (though, being fully vaccinated, I don’t know that it would significantly increase my risk of getting sick or getting others sick).

The teenager stabbed Monday in Côte-des-Neiges has died. Cops are seeking three other teenagers suspected in the case.

Clocking up the year’s 25th homicide.

Two armoured truck guys were pepper-sprayed late Monday near a bank on Jean-Talon in Park Ex, and the attackers made off with a sack of money, in the classic cartoon mode. A shot was fired but nobody was hit.

Looks like the two links are identical. Feel free to delete this once fixed.

      • Kate 16:51 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

There was ever only one link. But here’s La Presse, CBC and Global telling the story.

(In Ireland, the police are called the Garda. So the trucks and so on from that company always make me do a slight double-take.)

      • Max 19:43 on 2021-10-19 Permalink

I’m running a sleep deficit. Sorry about that.

Speaking of Ireland, if you haven’t seen the film The Guard, you should. It’s dark-funny as all hell and the soundtrack by Calexico is excellent.
