City is short of ashtrays
This item says the city is short of ashtrays although I’ll bet most smokers still toss their butts on the ground regardless whether there are better disposal options around.
Quentin Dufranne reminds us that in 2020, 245 fires were started by people putting out their smokes in flowerpots, and that in general, one in five fires is started by a cigarette.

I noticed in Plateau about 2/3rds of the wastebaskets that we had on sidewalks were removed, some leaving a square concrete base behind. Weirdly, plastic bags of garbage appear on these bases, even though we were supposed not to use these bins for ‘household waste’ when they still existed.

I honestly believe that Montreal cleanliness problems are not a municipal organization issue or a waste management issue, but a cultural issue. Sadly a lot of us are deeply narcissistic and treat the entire city as a garbage can. Keeping your garbage on you or in your car is such a drag, why not throw it wherever. And if you dare call out someone for littering, be prepared to get into a fight.

Is it specific to this city, though?
