Justin Trudeau to move to Montreal
After the end of the school year, Justin Trudeau plans to move to Montreal, but this fluff piece doesn’t specify a neighbourhood.

There’s still the family mansion on Pine Avenue…

I spoke to someone a few years ago who applied for a job as an archivist at the old Trudeau home. Apparently Pierre’s papers are stored there and they’re still going through all of them.
Justin used to live in this handsome house in Outremont while he was just an MP. I’m not sure if the family sold it or if it was being rented out while he was PM. Interestingly, the house is blurred on Streetview which is somewhat recent.

Either way it’s pretty safe to say he won’t be moving to his old riding, lol.

It just makes me more curious about it when a house is blurred on Google Maps

The property rolls say that house has been owned by the French state since 1998. Because of that it’s exempt from taxes, valued at 4.25 million.

I thought it was a diplomatic property …

Apparently Alexandre is living at the house on Pine.

That’s what I’d understood too, dwgs.
Two adult brothers might not want to cohabit, even in a big house, but you never know.

I get the human interest nature of this stuff, but I always find it unsettling. For the most part, Canadian politics tends to respect individuals’ private lives; we don’t have a big political tabloid machine here like in the UK. I don’t know that anyone is better off spending time thinking about where former politicians or their non-politician family members live. None of us is naive, we all know this information is out there and fairly easy to obtain, but it feels bad to pay attention to this sort of thing – and in other cases (e.g., our mayor), I could see how this kind of speculation could turn ugly pretty quickly. To be clear, I’m more concerned about the newspaper’s interest, less about the discussion here…

When he announced he was stepping down I assumed he would need to leave the country if he wanted any kind of peace.

Ok but what I want to actually speculate on is whether his kids will go to French or English schools. (Though I think the oldest or even the oldest two might be Cegep age. If I were guessing I’d assume they’d all do Brebeuf.)

To be clear, I want to guess about the language, not about the specific school. IIRC he made a point of saying his kids went to public school in Ottawa, though.

He will be forgotten ten minutes after the election. Mulroney was despised, but he still hung out at the bar at the Ritz. Remember Mulroney’s greatest crime, besides Airbus? Free Trade – which we are all now ready to die defending.

Is he single? (Asking for a friend)

Joey, I agree with you in general, but Justin T. is a special case – prime minister for almost ten years, son of a man who was PM for fifteen, still relatively young for someone who’s retired from politics. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to wonder whether he’s going to disappear permanently into private life (in contrast, we never hear much about his brother) or, if not, what he will go on to do.
I don’t even think it’s weird to wonder whether he’ll go live in that Art Deco palace on Pine, or if not, where.
I expect he’ll eventually head up some well-intentioned nonprofit stuff, but who knows.
walkerp, he’s still listed as separated, not divorced. But if he has anything of his father in him, I don’t imagine he’s spending all his time alone.
MarcG, I’m curious why you thought he’d have to leave Canada. It’s a big place.
MarcG 15:23 on 2025-03-28 Permalink
I figure he’s got enough fainting admirers and brainwormed Trudeau-is-Satan types from coast to coast to make it hard to just be a dude. But maybe the assumption that he wants that is false and the limelight is still appealing.

I guess my post this morning got lost in the ether but it’s looking like I’m likely wrong about that house in Outremont. I can’t find any information on it being JT’s anymore and maybe I got it mixed up with another one. I should do better fact checking before I post!
Joey 16:15 on 2025-03-28 Permalink
@Kate I agree he is very much still a public figure and I expect him to remain in public-facing roles here or abroad. It’s totally legit to speculate about that, IMO.
That said, I don’t think there’s any value in idly speculating about what street our public figures live on, how owns the property, what kind of school their kids go to, etc. I think our elected officials have lost much of a semblance of privacy in the last 10-20 years, and I regret that. It manifests itself in lots of different ways, and I don’t think we even hear anywhere near the worst of it. I think it also keeps a lot of very decent people from ever engaging in public service. And given how personal and violent some of the hate has been for JT specifically, I wouldn’t be comfortable being the reported assigned to find out where he’s going to live with his teenage children. Yes, we all wonder about that mansion. And it’s fun to point out, say, the block where Mulroney used to live. I get it. But the other end of the spectrum is really awful.
