This New York Times piece titled A 48-Hour Layover in Montreal With an Airline Pilot makes the city sound far more glam than it is.
steph
That reads like an exhausting 48 hours (I’m getting old).
DeWolf
Nice to see an itinerary that isn’t just the usual spots. I had no idea the ICAO headquarters has a museum.
PatrickC
34,000 steps! Talk about exhausting!
Nicholas
Agree with DeWolf. I can’t imagine such a winter itinerary from a non-local. (To be fair a local would split that up to do less, but when you only have 48 hours….)

I liked this article a lot. So many tourism writers focus on the same 15 or so things with maybe one other thing thrown in. This guy really went to check out some lesser-known places. I was going to pick up some bagels at Fairmount today but I think I’ll take advantage of the last day on my metro card and go to R.E.A.L.

Woke up to find that Canada is supporting the U.S. attack on Iran.
A demonstration against the attack is planned for Saturday afternoon.
Later, that link became a report on the demonstration. Commenting is now off.
A brief comment on Reddit summed up how I feel: “Iran’s oppressive dictatorship regime is bad, America starting another illegal war is bad.”
bob
Yes, well, Iran is an enemy of Canada’s, so it would stand to reason.
Kate
Why is it an enemy of Canada?
bob
I suppose it has something to do with what they get up to in the world.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has a long-standing history of abhorrent conduct, both domestically and internationally. For years, the Iranian government has denied its citizens their human rights and fundamental freedoms, and it has undertaken actions that seriously threaten global peace and security.” and so forth (https://www.international.gc.ca/country-pays/iran/relations.aspx?lang=eng).
Chris
Because they are an Islamist theocratic dictatorship.
Let’s see how close today’s protest gets to the 350k in Toronto protesting *against* the Islamic regime.
Kate
Does this mean we have to support killing people there? We may not like the regime but now as Canadians we’re forced to countenance attacking it and killing people inside it.
bob
If this topples this regime, it will end a lot of “killing people there”.
As to the demonstration, you may notice that it is just an anti-Israel demonstration, in front of the “Zionist” consulate, planned by a radically anti-Israel group. And that story was published with entitrely misleading set of photos from a completely different demonstration *against the regime*, one of which shows an Iranian, an Israeli, and an American flag together on one flag pole, and another featuring someone with a sign saying “Long live Iran’s Shah”. Not exactly journalism to the highest standards.

Kate, may I suggest turning comments off to spare us from this bloodlust?
Kate
I should’ve from the start. It’s not local news but I couldn’t ignore it.

A rink has opened at Place Ville-Marie near the ring, but its operations necessarily depend on the weather.
mare
My friend yesterday said it was refrigerated, but obviously hadn’t skated there yet. If they want it to be open until end of March and have a chalet with staff and beer, it better not be a big puddle like all other skating rinks today.

The city page shows the percentage, as it has for a long time; infoneige.ca has an even more informative page with percentage cleared/clearing this 12 h/planned/not yet planned.
