Hands needed for the pandemic
CTV talks to a young woman who cut short her stage training to work in a hospital because of the pandemic.
Quebec is preparing an offer to pay nursing students to interrupt their training and put their skills to work immediately. Health authorities are expecting Montreal hospitals to be overwhelmed within the next two to three weeks.
I’m seeing signs that people are shocked about this wave of Covid. But it was the second wave of Spanish influenza in the autumn of 1918 that was the bad one. Yes, I know that Covid-19 is not an influenza, but this second wave effect might be more a phenomenon of human behaviour than the evolution of a pathogen.

I read that Ireland are entering a third wave – way worse than second wave

It’s not clear whether this is natural progression or because of a new variant – either way it’s bad news for everybody this winter
Sorry if this spoils people’s happy new year – which I wish you all nonetheless

Using this tool to view and compare historical levels of Covid-19, a third wave is indeed happening.

(Remove all current countries and enter Ireland and Quebec (and/or other countries provinces) and you can plot nice graphs. To see the third wave graph you need to change the start date to July and increase the “stop after x days’ value to 300 or so. Quebec just had a small dip in the fall, Ireland’s cases count went down sharply and then up again. It’s nearing Quebec’s current counts.)

Side note: the Spanish flu had four waves.
