Fraud at Lester B. Pearson
CBC is delving into the alleged fraud and forgery at the Lester B. Pearson school board. Short version: foreign students were apparently used as cash cows; I can’t easily summarize the allegations beyond that.
If Quebec schools, public and private, are to entice people from other countries to come here for courses, shouldn’t there be someone in government who looks after their interests and makes sure they don’t get fleeced?

It ain’t just here. Innumerable universities and schools across North America profit off the backs of foreign students. As institutions become more profit-driven, they rely on international students to make up for lost revenue — charging exorbitant rates for foreigners to subsidize a lower tuition rate for the locals.
You hit the nail on the head, Kate. There’s a systemic issue at play where foreign students, who hail predominantly from Asia and/or are non-white, are treated as cash cows instead of human beings.
I don’t think the government sees it a priority to protect international students when it’s often their neo-liberal policies that are cutting public education funding. And naturally, it’s hard for international students to band together, especially when there are structural factors that are stacked against them
