Writers’ union to sell house
The Quebec writers’ union, UNEQ, owns a very nice house on Laval Street where Émile Nelligan used to live, but now they plan to sell it because they don’t want to pay union dues.
How can you expect the protection of a union if you don’t want to chip in?

As far as I know the UNEQ never used to be a labour union, it was more of a free association of writers, a much larger version of its anglo equivalent the Quebec Writers’ Federation. Yes, the U stood for union, but it wasn’t that kind of union. And then the new Loi sur le statut de l’artiste came along and transformed the UNEQ into a fully fledged labour union, because all artists are now supposed to be unionized.
But apparently not everyone is in agreement. At least, that is my (admittedly limited) understanding.
