As previously reported, an all-paper replacement for the soon to be banished Publisac will be delivered by Canada Post, starting mid‑May.

Marlene Jennings has written a Gazette piece Wednesday about the value of local papers, the last of which have been distributed in the Publisac along with a large sheaf of store flyers. Like the owner of Metro a few days ago, she’s calling on the city to support the local papers directly, and also by advertising municipal notices in them.

“Delivered by Canada Post” so the no-flyers sticker on my mailbox will be intentionally ignored?

    • Joey 10:13 on 2023-04-27 Permalink

@Mozai it’s not entirely clear. The La Presse story implies that a no-flyers sticker should be adequate, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some mandatory ‘official’ Canada Post no-flyer sticker that is functionally equivalent to every other sticker already out there but nevertheless required to actually opt out. I wonder if CP has tried to determine how many households on a given route are already opting out of unsolicited mail.

Here’s the source of the Canada Post instructions, which also details what counts as junk mail. Someone in my building printed a few dozen of the no-flyer icon stickers and left them for everyone, and they’ve been respected. If Plante wanted to continue the battle she could print and mail one to every household in the city.

One can’t assume in every case but it sure feels like a Fodor’s guide to mob-owned businesses in Montreal.

La Presse is considering the growing numbers of deliberately childless couples and the question of how society will cope with a falling population in future.

This seems to mesh with two other current stories: Canada to make efforts to attract more francophone immigrants and Quebec to reverse a decision it made in 2020 and make it easier for francophone graduates to stay in Quebec.

Let’s follow the US: ban abortion and remove restrictions on child labour.

Let’s see, how can we change this? Social workers that couples can talk to, to ask questions about raising children and supporting them. The Immigration ministry needs an Absorption department, to help immigrants get their paperwork, find housing, learn the language…. follow them in their first year and hold their hand as they learn our system. Help them understand banking. Help them get their driver’s licence… whatever it takes to make their transition smooth… and if we need to, set up families to adopt them, so they don’t feel alone… people they can talk to and converse with, so they can feel more comfortable in the language (in fact, I did this at one time as part of a UNESCO program, while in University, intended to help new immigrants.) Even a meeting with the Police, so both sides can get a better understanding of the place of police in our society and the police can learn about different ethnic groups.

Maybe paying people a living wage, family sustainable wage, could incite people to have children. I personally delayed wanting children for years because I simply “could not afford it”.

    • walkerp 11:01 on 2023-04-27 Permalink

We don’t want more children. I love children, but as our economy evolves, we reduce population over time. Dependency on a constantly growing population to constantly increase production is destroying our world.

“Backtracking”. What a nice and euphemistic way to say that the CAQ f**ked up big time with the PEQ reforms. They thought they’d make it tougher for foreign students to live here as immigrants but now realize that the province’s economy is going to suffer as a direct result. The question is, is the CAQ ready to deal iwth the increasing number of pure laine DINK couples?

The post-WWII years were the aberration for everything, and people have to stop thinking they were normal.

Interesting, Kevin. I don’t know much about historical methods of birth control, but one of the main factors in historical demography is what Steph points out – people have children when they can afford them. Usually this was connected to the age people got married. When times were good, you could set yourself up as an independent adult earlier, get married and have more kids. The longer it takes for you to establish yourself as a financially independent adult, the fewer kids. More effective birth control might have led to more pre-marital sex, but I suspect overall the economic connection to marriage/establishing a family has remained the same.

As of July 1, the STM will be increasing transit fares: 25 cents for a single ticket, $3 more for a monthly pass.

    • Kevin 15:42 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

They’ve also come up with a bus-only fare, which is cheaper, for those who are going on or off-island and don’t want to take the REM or metro. https://www.scribd.com/document/640963314/Fare-Prices-in-and-Around-Montreal#

    • Nicholas 15:48 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

Kevin, that bus fare already exists: it’s valid in and between zones ABC on all buses (except a few Exo buses). The only thing that’s changing is the price is going up along with the zone A all modes tickets, as they’re both the same price. Note, however, that even though the prices are the same, they are separate tickets, so if you have zone A all modes tickets you can’t use them for a bus only trip from A to B; you need a separate ticket, and to not confuse the card if departing on a bus in Zone A, a separate OPUS or an occasionel.

    • Kevin 17:43 on 2023-04-26 Permalink

      @Nicholas
The schedule I was looking at has bus ABC at $3.75, and all modes ABC at $6.75.
      What am I missing?

The case against Pierre Ny St-Amand, the Laval bus driver accused of crashing his bus into a daycare in February, was briefly opened Wednesday then postponed till mid‑June. The issue whether St‑Amand could be considered criminally responsible seems to be hanging in the balance.

Update: St-Amand wants to stay at Pinel, while the prosecution wanted him moved to jail even if it meant a deterioration in his mental state. The judge decided to keep him at Pinel while awaiting trial.
