A worker for a tree management company – the ironically named Safe‑T‑Tree – died in St‑Laurent on Thursday afternoon after coming into contact with a power line. His body hung there for an hour until experts from the fire department were able to bring it down safely. The CNESST will investigate.

Reactions from CTV – some more or less meaningless vox pops from people in the area, but also a few brief sidelights from people in the industry.

Sorry for his family, but at least it’s a pretty fast and painless way to go. Being an arborist is not an easy job even in the best of circumstances.

It will cost $1.1 billion to excavate the main tunnel for the blue line extension, as well as three of the five stations.

Only Pomerleau bid, so they will lead the consortium to do the work.

Well, that sure is convenient. To be fair the city is a notoriously bad client for any kind of serious work, but still.

I don’t think it’s corrupt. I don’t know how much of the choice comes from a Quebec‑first policy, but there actually can’t be many engineering firms around here with expertise and experience in a project on this scale. We’ve had discussions on this topic here before.

Two McGill profs describe how the campus has become a fortress and nobody gets in without a McGill ID.

The Gazette says the university plans to reopen the campus normally as of August 5.

Tried to walk thru campus from Milton tonight around 9:30 and it was all fenced off. Even Roddick gates were fenced off.

Wow I’m glad they got rid of that encampment to alleviate the feelings of hostility and negativity so that academic life could be enjoyed in a peaceful, respectful atmosphere. This sure worked better than negotiating with the protestors on any meaningful level. What a great moment for McGill to have the opportunity to so clearly show its goodwill toward its community in these trying times.

I’m late to the discussion, but just wanted to mention that requiring a McGill ID is very problematic – McGill doesn’t give out ID cards to most part-time staff, so I’m sure many many people that legitimately turned up to work would have been turned away! Not to mention the large number of contractors, and of course, all the other people that might be visiting a university campus for research or other learning that wouldn’t have any McGill ID… at least it’s the Summer, so things are a lot quieter.

That’s a relief! What an odd story, do you think he was sleepwalking or just doing a 10-year old runaway plan?

Cops didn’t invoke an Amber Alert because there was no reason to suspect an abduction. I think the kid just went walkabout for some reason.
