I just got doorstepped by Luc Rabouin, Jean-François Lalonde (mayoral candidate in VSMPE) and the woman running to replace Mary Deros in Park Ex (she won’t, but she seemed nice).
Later note: I was wrong. Projet’s Elvira Carhuallanqui defeated Mary Deros by 44 votes.
Ian
Huh. I guess my neighbourhood is considered a safer bet, we haven’t had anyone come by.
Kate
I did find out one thing, which is that Jean‑François Lalonde is not related to Laurence Lavigne Lalonde, who’s been mayor till now.
Also, they’re very aware that there’s a risk of splitting the “progressive” mayoral vote with Craig Sauvé.
(I think they were a little surprised that I knew as much as I do about the whole campaign and the personalities, which was kind of fun. It was almost as fun as the time Guillaume Lavoie rang the bell when he was campaigning for VSMPE mayor with Coderre’s party and I gave him hell about trying to revive baseball.)

I just saw two of the people running for Projet in my hood walking down the street looking shiny like they were just finishing up some door-to-door. I resisted the urge to scream out their names; it must be so weird having your face plastered all over the place.

The plight of François Legault after recent polls showed his popularity in the cellar inspired several cartoonists this week.Ygreck was amused by the government’s plan to force doctors to comply with their new law, as were Côté and Godin.
Unsatisfactory responses from the Canada Revenue Agency information services inspired Godin and Côté to japes this week.
Most of Côté’s work this week was focused on the Quebec City election, but the centre bottom frame of this piece has resonance here as well.
Both Godin and Chapleau drew Pierre Poilievre with Donald Trump’s hair.
Is it fair to make fun of a person’s appearance? Ygreck had no compunctions about lampooning Manon Massé after her announcement that she’d be leaving politics soon.
And, although his drawing style is not my favourite, Ygreck also drew a pertinent image of the presence of artificial intelligence in our politics.

I’m sure this new legislation will fix access to health care just like austerity, buying out nurses and doctors, creating a new health agency….
Chris
I know a lot of doctors, and many are shopping around Ontario and elsewhere. They are educated, mobile, and in demand everywhere. This may be one the CAQ’s bigger fuck ups.
Ian
Squeezing doctors has always been a risky bet, assuming that they have enough ties to Quebec that they won’t simply migrate if the pressure gets too much… the gamble is figuring out where the tipping point is. Whichever politician finds that out doesn’t win a prize other than going down in history.
roberto
I thought their game play was obvious; drive doctors OUT of the public sector. Neoliberalism sabotages the public sector to the point where the public gives up on it and have to rely on the private sector more and more.
Ian
Well yeah except for the legislation preventing doctors form doing just that. Gotta keep up appearances.

I was also doorstepped a few weeks ago by pm here by Elvira impossible surname. The seem to have a decent ground game here even though they are probably not getting much love. No sign of any others other than posting on contentious subjects on facebook (and as for Mary Deros all I see of her is her car double parking on St. Roch in the mornings sometimes). Voting was a breeze today, I suspect the turnout will be higher than last time.

Mary Deros has always responded to me when I’ve emailed her about unsafe or unsatisfactory things in my immediate neighbourhood. Even something like a street bench that was removed for construction and not put back in. It was replaced a short time later. A gaping hole on a construction site that wasn’t secured. Fences went up. A dangerous corner (where I was nearly hit by a car because the driver’s visibility was blocked by a vehicle parked flush at the corner) which was painted with markings pushing parking back a few metres.
I know this is trivia, but she’s the borough councillor around here and trivia is her job, and she does it.
I should also mention one situation on the other side of the border about which I emailed the Projet councillor for Villeray, Martine Musau Muele, and it too was looked after. (I live just at the edge of the line between Park Ex and Villeray, which are both part of VSMPE.)
These items were all too trivial to blog about, but seem worth mentioning here because for some reason many people like to think their representatives do nothing. You have to communicate if you see a problem. You won’t always get satisfaction but sometimes you do.

I agree, in general reporting things here gets results here pretty efficiently, though I have no idea who exactly deals with it. I usually report things through the app with photos and location, and things are quickly resolved (missing garbage cans, dumped construction material, etc.) and they do read feedback on public consultations if you submit it. With traffic infractions (cars blocking junctions, driveways and alleys) also gets a pretty quick response from the police too.

To echo what’s already been said, when you make an official complaint — either by calling 311, reporting something through the Montreal app or emailing your local councillor — things get done. It’s impressive. And it makes you realize that all the people complaining incessantly on social media are wasting their time because they’d rather post a snarky Facebook comment than call 311 and do something productive.

Why not both? Assuming that people that raise heck online are thumb-sitters is an unfair and implicates literaqlly all the commenters here.
Personall I go straight to emergency services instead of my city or borough reps, it’;s amazing what the fire department can get done almsot right away that takes tborough council months to even acknowledge.
